Description of problem: Repeated kerneloops freeezes with nouveau kernel driver. Multiple times a day. System virtually unusuable. F33 with nvidia card. When running F30, never froze. Feb 02 09:46:15 localhost kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: bus: MMIO write of 80000028 FAULT at 10eb14 [ IBUS ] Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-1.0.15-10.fc33.x86_64 How reproducible: ? Steps to Reproduce: 1. disable wayland 2. use nvidia card GeForce GTX 950 3. normal usage; no special workload. Web browser, evolution client, emacs, signal, zoom Actual results: System freezes and goes catatonic. Reboot needed. Can't ping nor login remotely. Expected results: Should not freeze and lock up. Additional info: I was using kernel-5.10-11-200 x86_64 and it froze. I also tried rawhide debug kernel-5-11-0-0.rc5.134.fc34.x86_64 upon recommendation of AskFedora community members. Still locked up and froze. I don't have a kernel dump report because the reporting tool says I have a tainted kernel (flags GDW). I am not running any non opensource drivers that I'm aware of. Happy to run any kind of experiments or beta test or try to get kernel dump. Anything would be better than current usability.
I had the same issue about half a year ago: At that time, Fedora 32 was installed on my computer. Up to kernel release 5.6.19 (updated 2020-06-13), everything was fine. After 'dnf update' to kernel 5.7.6 (on 2020-06-20), nearly daily my computer freezed once or twice with the features described above. I kept the grub2 boot-stuff for kernel 5.6.19, which I had to use after every 'dnf update' (if a new kernel was included). This persisted even after dist-upgrading to Fedora 33. Of course, I didn't want to use Fedora 32 after that, I disabled the nouveau-driver and installed the nvidia-driver from rpmfusion with the expected result: no further freezing. My computer was set up in the late 2017 with Fedora 26 (minimal server installation), group-installed with the LXDE-Desktop (plus usual Workstation groups). My video card is a 'VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 710] (rev a1)', pci-id 10de:128b.
Hi! others have suggested switching to the nvidia-driver but I was hoping to avoid going that route. Years ago when I did run it, each new kernel update required me to basically re-install the driver. I was hoping to avoid all the extra work doing that. Also, it would be nice if the nouveau driver was simply fixed. Thanks, Bobby
Hi! I re-enabled Wayland, turned off cairo-dock, and switched to dash-to-dock. My system has been stable now for several days. I'm wondering if their is some code path in the nouveau driver that croaks when X11 is enabled. Bobby
Hi! Kernel freeze today with wayland enabled (not xorg) gnome session. Same place. Feb 12 16:04:20 localhost kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: bus: MMIO write of 800000dc FAULT at 10eb14 [ IBUS ] Wish this would get fixed as it makes fedora desktop unreliable. Bobby

This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life. Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '33'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 33 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-11-30. Fedora 33 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug.
