RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Stefan Hajnoczi 2021-02-18 16:50:39 UTC
Description of problem:
In some cases virtio-blk with iothreads is ~30% slower than without. These cases need to be investigated because enabling iothreads is supposed to improve performance across the board.

One example is randwrite,bs=64kb,iodepth=1 with 16 threads.

http://kvm-perf.englab.nay.redhat.com/results/regression/multiqueue_rhel8.4.0/dataplane/4queues/raw.virtio_blk.*.x86_64.html

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
qemu-kvm-5.2.0-1.module+el8.4.0+9091+650b220a

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
See benchmark details above.

Actual results:
~30% slower with iothreads in some cases.

Expected results:
iothreads should be similar or faster than without iothreads.

Bulk update: Move RHEL-AV bugs to RHEL9. If necessary to resolve in RHEL8, then clone to the current RHEL8 release.

Stefan,

Do you think this one is doable for RHEL9 investigation / inclusion?

I have too many ongoing tasks at the moment. It's possible that some of the optimizations I've been working on will apply to this BZ but I can't commit to it for RHEL9.

Hi Stefan,

After tried in latest rhel9.1, there is just a little performance degradation(~3%) for several combinations of read, but most of them, the performance is better after adding the iothread.

Check below link for the details:
http://kvm-perf.englab.nay.redhat.com/results/regression/nvme9.1.0_qemu7.0.0-9_kernel5.14.0-96_iothread/raw.virtio_blk.*.x86_64.html

Could you please check again? I think we could close this bug as currentrelease then.

Thanks.

Thanks, I agree performance looks acceptable and we can close this bug.
