Log from broken kernel

1. Please describe the problem:

With kernel 5.11 (also tested on Fedora 33 before), I'm unable to activate my ethernet connection. It always fails after a while. I tried to investigate and it appears that older kernel 5.10 used r8152 driver for it, while kernel 5.11 defaults now to r8153, which apparently is responsible for my issue.

2. What is the Version-Release number of the kernel:

kernel-5.11.0-156.fc34.x86_64

3. Did it work previously in Fedora? If so, what kernel version did the issue
*first* appear? Old kernels are available for download at
   https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 :

Broken kernels:
kernel-5.11.0-0.rc7.20210210gite0756cfc7d7c.150.fc34.x86_64
kernel-5.11.0-156.fc34.x86_64

Working kernels:
kernel-5.10.14-200.fc33.x86_64
kernel-5.10.15-200.fc33.x86_64
kernel-5.10.16-200.fc33.x86_64

4. Can you reproduce this issue? If so, please provide the steps to reproduce
   the issue below:

Simply boot and even during the boot, you will see that NetworkManager-wait-online.service fails during the boot.

5. Does this problem occur with the latest Rawhide kernel? To install the
Rawhide kernel, run ``sudo dnf install fedora-repos-rawhide`` followed by
   ``sudo dnf update --enablerepo=rawhide kernel``:

Yes.

6. Are you running any modules that not shipped with directly Fedora's kernel?:

No.

7. Please attach the kernel logs. You can get the complete kernel log
   for a boot with ``journalctl --no-hostname -k > dmesg.txt``. If the
issue occurred on a previous boot, use the journalctl ``-b`` flag.

Thank you for reporting this, this is caused by:

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/kernel@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/HND3JOXNFBJE57VE4IBF3ICKYW4OGHPO/

Which is supposed to be fixed, but clearly is not, from the /lib/modules/5.11..../config file :

# CONFIG_USB_RTL8152 is not set

Justin, do you know what is going on here ?

Comment 4 Jan Grulich 2021-02-24 07:38:56 UTC
Everything works with kernel-5.11.1-300.fc34. I think we can now close this bug.
