Description Andrew Gaul 2021-03-05 10:49:29 UTC
Description of problem:

updatedb crawls large remote S3 object stores which incurs a high IO cost. This confuses users who experience poor performance and high AWS bills. Similar to NFS and ceph, the s3fs project would like to add fuse.s3fs to PRUNEFS.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

mlocate-0.26-27.fc33.x86_64

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. s3fs bucket /path

Actual results:

updatedb crawls /path, never completes

Expected results:

updatedb does not crawl /path

Additional info:

Tracking issue: https://github.com/s3fs-fuse/s3fs-fuse/issues/1587
Similar ceph issue: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1223582

Fix.

It should be fixed also in RHEL-7 (CentOS-7) and higher.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '33'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Verified that this is not fixed on Fedora 35. Can we apply the suggested trivial patch?

Comment 14 Jan Kratochvil 2024-11-10 08:36:56 UTC
On Fedora 40 there is slocate instead. I do not see it would be even built for Fedora 41: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/mlocate
slocate does not seem to me to have this problem.
I do not understand why mlocate is not declared as orphaned/unmaintained when there are no longer any f41+ builds.

Comment 15 Jan Kratochvil 2024-11-10 08:37:32 UTC
Sorry plocate, not slocate.

Comment 16 Fedora Admin user for bugzilla script actions 2025-02-14 01:56:01 UTC
This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.
