Description Adam Kaplan 2021-03-10 15:48:39 UTC
Description of problem:

On Fedora 33 Silverblue, the integrated microphone with my Lenovo P1 (2nd Gen) stops working when I plug in headphones that do not have their own built-in microphone.
When the headphones are not plugged in, the only sound options in GNOME are as follows:

1. Output - "Speakers - Built-in Audio"
2. Input - "Internal Microphone - Built-in Audio"

When my headphones are plugged in, I again only have one option for sound input and output. However, they change to the following:

1. Output - "Headphones - Built-in Audio"
2. Input - "Microphone - Built-in Audio"

With the headphones plugged in, no audio is captured in standard applications (Firefox, Chrome, Cheese).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 33.20210309.0

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start the computer with no external headphones attached.
2. Test the microphone by recording a video in Cheese.
3. Verify that the recording includes microphone input.
4. Plug in headphones which do not include their own microphone
5. Test the microphone again by recording a video in Cheese.
6. Verify the recording includes microphone input.
7. In GNOME sound settings, try to revert the audio to use the internal microphone and speakers.

Actual results:

Images record the second time, but audio does not.
Cannot revert to using Speakers for sound output and Internal Microphone for input.

Expected results:

Speakers and Internal Microphone can always be selected for sound output/input.
Switching to Internal Microphone for sound input allows sound to be captured in Cheese recordings.

Update - of course now the microphone works. Changing reproducibility to "Sometimes."

I have often observed that the microphone stops working when I need to attend a BlueJeans meeting. Thereafter the microphone stops working for all other applications, and many times a reboot cycle does not help. Perhaps I need to "reboot + wipe out Chrome session?"

Updated - discovered that this is an issue when I plug in a headset that does not have a microphone that can be connected to a computer.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '33'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Fedora 33 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-11-30. Fedora 33 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
