I've got a new build coming which I hope helps with this. It at least fixes the "doesn't display an image" problem.

geeqie-1.6-3.git737a3dc.fc34 fixes a crash/no jpeg's displayed under wayland THX.
It fixes image loading indeed. No idea why the NEWS doc file is missing the entry for v1.6, though. It is back to v1.5.1. ;-)
