Description of problem: After booting Fedora-Workstation-34_Beta-1.3.aarch64.raw.xz everything works ok, but after doing dnf update of this install the touchscreen and the display do not work anymore. The system is still accessible via the network but the display does not work. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 34 (Beta) How reproducible: Probably completely, haven't tried twice but had the same issue on Fedora 33 Steps to Reproduce: 1.Burn the image on SD card with arm-image-installer 2.Boot the system, run the setup, everything including the touchscreen works OK, thanks! 3.Do dnf update 4.Reboot Actual results: Display blank/dark and touch screen not working Expected results: Display and touch screen should work like with the fresh setup before doing dnf update Additional info: I had the same problem on Fedora 33, but there switching back to the kernel that comes with the boot image, there 5.8.15-301.fc33.aarch64.conf restores this functionality but this does not seem to work anymore with fedora 34 beta
Created attachment 1780801 [details] List of files that need to be restored after the update to the originals (before the update) to make the touchscreen work again Hello Fedora! So... this is an Orphan bug whatever that means? So in addition to this bug report I tried to install Fedora 34, Fedora-Workstation-34-1.2.aarch64.raw.xz and I found out that the situation is even worse there because with this image the touch screen does not work right from the start... So I thought, that is a bad sign.. including the orphan state of this bug and I felt really orphaned... And so I thought maybe I should look into this myself then... And so I did. So I started again with the image of Fedora 34 Beta, and after the initial install I btrfs snapshotted the root file system and made a backup copy of the /boot partition with /boot/efi mounted under it. Then I ran dnf update and I lost the touch screen as expected. And so then I restored the /boot partition and /boot/efi from the backup and rebooted again and what do you know? The touch screen came back yes! So once I discovered this I tried to narrow this down and so I tried to restore only the /boot/efi partition and that worked as well.. Ok then. Then I thought, let's try to only restore all the "*rpi*" files, and that worked as well. And the list of these files can be found in this attachment. Then this morning, I thought if I have the raspberry 4B maybe I need only these files, so there are only two of those, bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb and rpi4-u-boot.bin and what do you know? That worked as well Yes! So the bottom line is that these files from the Fedora 34 Beta raw image still work but not beyond that... So maybe you could look into that and not let the official Raspberry Pi touch screen be orphaned? Thanks. In the meantime, you will understand, I am holding on to the 34 Beta raw image like anything to be able to fix my touch screen, until you fix this bug. That's it have a nice day! Kind regards, Ondrej
Btw, I found this very similar story about Ubuntu, efi images and black screens while it does not appear to be related to the Raspberry Pi and Fedora at all... But maybe a little bit about being orphaned... May you be interested about this funny coincidence... (or is it?) https://youtu.be/s_SrOPjM6Sk Kind regards, Ondrej
