Description Vasil Velichkov 2021-05-03 14:20:36 UTC
A new version 3.8.3.0 is available since 2021-03-17. It includes various fixes documented in https://github.com/gnuradio/gnuradio/blob/v3.8.3.0/CHANGELOG.md#3830---2021-03-17

Would it be possible to update this version in Fedora 33?

Comment 1 Jaroslav Škarvada 2021-05-03 14:29:05 UTC
I will check. It was usually quite painful process requiring rebuild of all dependent packages. Now with the proper sonames in 3.8, it could be enough to just update the gnuradio.

Hi Jaroslav,

Thanks for looking into this. Let me know if you need any help updating or testing the new builds. I have experience building rpm packages but I'm not member of the packager group.

Comment 3 Jaroslav Škarvada 2021-05-03 20:39:16 UTC
It requires volk. It is really bad that they split the package in minor release. It would require adding standalone volk to f33. The volk has some issues with secondary arches. I am afraid we shouldn't do this in the stable release.

Comment 4 Marcus Müller 2021-05-03 21:45:53 UTC
For the 3.8.x.y series, VOLK can still be built (and by default, is still built) in-tree.

We changed that behaviour for 3.9.0.0, where VOLK becomes an external dependency.

For all practical purposes, 3.7.0, 3.8.0.0, 3.9.0.0 are major releases (changing dependencies and APIs), whereas the third digit (e.g. 3.8.2.0->3.8.3.0) signifies ABI breakage, but not fundamental dependency (or API) changes.

Hi Marcus,

There is no gnuradio 3.8.3.0 source tarball in [1] and the archive you can download from github[2] does not contains the VOLK sources. Can we get a source archive with bundled VOLK like for the previous releases?

Yep, I used the github tag. If upstream could provide the 3.8 sources with the volk, I think there shouldn't be problem to update.

Comment 7 Jaroslav Škarvada 2021-06-14 19:49:27 UTC
Currently the update of the gnuradio is blocked by the following f33 build root conflicts:

This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '33'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.
