Description of problem: Unable to use non-ibus input methods on GNOME Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 33 How reproducible: Follow the instructions at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/I18N/InputMethods Steps to Reproduce: 1. remove the shortcut keys for Switch to next input source from Keyboard->Shortcuts tab->Typing on gnome-control-center 2. remove all of the input source which is related to ibus (not sure if it's possible?) 3. install im-chooser, imsettings and imsettings-gsettings on f21 or later 4. reboot and login Actual results: Unable to use im-chooser, it shows $ im-chooser (im-chooser:2510): libimchooseui-WARNING **: 02:22:23.083: Current desktop isn't supported. Please follow instructions on your desktop to enable Input Method. (im-chooser:2510): libimchooseui-WARNING **: 02:22:23.083: Current desktop isn't supported. Please follow instructions on your desktop to enable Input Method. Expected results: Be able to use im-chooser to switch to another input method, e.g., fcitx5 Additional info: Unable to remove ibus: $ sudo dnf remove ibus Error: Problem: The operation would result in removing the following protected packages: gnome-shell (try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages) This is also unexpected. In previous Fedora version (e.g. 32) ibus could be removed without such an error.
xinput is just a debugging tool not involved in any of this (it's little more than a specialised version of `cat`). Punting to im-chooser since that's where that error message comes from.
That warning message says it all. this isn't really new. please ask GNOME upstream for the way of changing the input methods to your favarite one. imsettings just followed that but there are nothing such things anymore. it can't do any help without their support.
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 35 development cycle. Changing version to 35.
This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 35 is nearing its end of life. Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 35 on 2022-12-13. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a 'version' of '35'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version' to a later Fedora Linux version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora Linux 35 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version prior to this bug being closed.
Again, please ask GNOME upstream to use non-ibus input methods there.
