Created attachment 1786725 [details] kernel logs 1. Please describe the problem: I don't know if it's related, but lately I've been experiencing sudden freezes where the system seems to be running, but certain operations (writing certain files, opening programs, opening URLs in Firefox) stop working altogether until reboot. Shutdown also hangs with some messages in this case. ------------[ cut here ]------------ kernel BUG at block/bio.c:52! invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP PTI CPU: 7 PID: 39736 Comm: I/O pool 6 Tainted: P OE 5.12.5-300.fc34.x86_64 #1 Hardware name: To Be Filled By O.E.M. What is the Version-Release number of the kernel: kernel-5.12.5-300.fc34.x86_64 3. Did it work previously in Fedora? If so, what kernel version did the issue *first* appear? Old kernels are available for download at https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 : Not sure, haven't seen it before. 4. Can you reproduce this issue? If so, please provide the steps to reproduce the issue below: Not sure how to reproduce. 5. Does this problem occur with the latest Rawhide kernel? To install the Rawhide kernel, run ``sudo dnf install fedora-repos-rawhide`` followed by ``sudo dnf update --enablerepo=rawhide kernel``: I'm running Silverblue, not sure how to do this and not sure how to reproduce. 6. Are you running any modules that not shipped with directly Fedora's kernel?: NVIDIA GPU driver. 7. Please attach the kernel logs. You can get the complete kernel log for a boot with ``journalctl --no-hostname -k > dmesg.txt``. If the issue occurred on a previous boot, use the journalctl ``-b`` flag.
I suspect it might be a kernel 5.12 regression, seems like I got the first weird filesystem hang on the day I upgraded to 5.12. I rolled back to 5.11.21 and had no issues thus far. Another hang I got while I was on 5.12 was with a bind mounted folder (ls or any operations on the folder hanged). Other filesystems, also other folders on the filesystem of the bind mount target seemed to be doing fine. Nothing in the journal.
Found a kernel bugzilla report that matches my issue: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213249 It specifically says the freeze is for the bcache partition, which also seems to match what I had.
My system won't even boot with kernel-5.12.8-200.fc33.x86_64 (nor with the earlier 5.12.8). Some filesystems fail to mount. I have 8 (total) filesystems mounted at boot. I use raid1/lvm, no bcache. I failed one member out of the array to no avail. kernel-5.11.21-200.fc33.x86_64 continues to run fine. $ df -lPThx tmpfs -x devtmpfs # note '[sanitized]' used for privacy Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/ssd-root ext4 24G 17G 5.4G 76% / /dev/md0 ext4 613M 117M 451M 21% /boot /dev/mapper/ssd-gate--squid xfs 2.0G 35M 2.0G 2% /var/spool/squid /dev/mapper/ssd-fasthome xfs 172G 70G 103G 41% /home/[sanitized] /dev/mapper/ssd-gate--imap xfs 40G 3.0G 38G 8% /var/spool/imap /dev/mapper/hd4-video xfs 1.6T 391G 1.2T 25% /video /dev/mapper/hd4-slowhome xfs 400G 37G 363G 10% /home/[sanitized]backup /dev/mapper/hd-local xfs 1.6T 1.3T 366G 78% /local $ cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid1] md1 : active raid1 sdb3[2](W) sda3[0] 249271616 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU] bitmap: 1/1 pages [4KB], 1048576KB chunk md0 : active raid1 sdb1[2] sda1[0] 653760 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU] bitmap: 0/1 pages [0KB], 1048576KB chunk unused devices: <none> Jun 3 22:31:15 gate kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------ Jun 3 22:31:15 gate kernel: kernel BUG at block/bio.c:52! Can confirm the issue on Fedora 33 as well (latest kernel 5.12.10-200) - using bcache. The upstream bug report (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213181) provides a simple patch. Any hope to get it integrated before upstream?

Similar to my comment #3, cannot successfully boot with kernel-5.12.11-200.fc33.x86_64. This bug should be re-opened.
I installed the kernel-5.12.11-300.fc34.x86_64 update yesterday and had no issues thus far.
