KDE Software Compilation 423526 0 VHI RESOLVED "Switch user" functionality has disappeared from Kicker and Kickoff 2021-06-05 19:29:35 UTC

Description Christoph Unger 2021-05-25 15:21:22 UTC
Description of problem: After a user has locked the screen (by closing the lid on a laptop or by selecting "lock" from the menu) or put the system to sleep, it is not possible to select another user for log in. This makes the system unusable on a multi-user machine.

Furthermore, there is no option to switch users in KDE.

This happens on Fedora 34 KDE Spin.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 34

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. On a machine with at least two user accounts, one user logs in.
2. The logged in user locks the screen or puts the system.
3. Another user attempts to log in.

Actual results: The log-in screen appears showing only the user who put the system to sleep or locked the screen, and there is no possibility to choose another user for log-in.

Expected results: A log-in screen appears that presents an option to switch users.

Additional info: On Fedora 33 KDE Spin it worked as expected.

Comment 1 Dr. Tilmann Bubeck 2021-06-05 19:29:35 UTC
This bug comes from plasma-workspace (and not sddm). Why? (1) It occurs with GDM, KDM as well and (2) the switch user function is missing in kscreenlocker as well as the kde application menu. Reassigning to plasma-workspace.

It seems to be a incompatibility between KDE (kdisplaymanager.cc) and probably systemd (246+). More info here:

Comment 2 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2021-07-17 08:43:28 UTC
Proposed as a Blocker for 35-beta by Fedora user bubeck using the blocker tracking app because:

Violation of https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Testcase_desktop_login especially "The alternative actions (switch user, shut down, restart, suspend etc) should behave as expected."

Why? It is not possible to switch users in KDE desktop environment. See BUG for more details.

Comment 3 Adam Williamson 2021-07-20 23:57:16 UTC
This is intentional. We disabled user switching by default because of significant known bugs that are not yet fixed. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1929643 for the discussion around this. You can re-enable user switching if you don't mind running the risk of the bugs, you just have to change the relevant configuration settings - see https://pagure.io/fedora-kde/kde-settings/c/2d30395742e3e2414d9fa9d944d57049140466b0?branch=rawhide .
