Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because
the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description of problem:
Following the instructions of the following link, I am trying to use the COMM package instead of the default OS package. I remove ice.pkg link and create a new link to the comm package, when I boot I see that the default OS package is loaded
https://downloadmirror.intel.com/29889/eng/readme_1.3.30.0.txt
If i execute the following commands I can see that the comm package is loaded, but when i reboot the server the default OS package is loaded again
rmmod ice
modprobe ice
[root@computeovsdpdksriov-r740-0 ddp]# dmesg | grep -i ddp
[ 8.356948] ice 0000:3b:00.0: The DDP package was successfully loaded: ICE OS Default Package version 1.3.16.0

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 8.4 (Ootpa)
How reproducible:
1. change ice.pkg link to the comm package
2. reboot the server
3. check loaded package with dmesg
Actual results:
Default OS package is loaded after reboot
Expected results:
COMM DDP package should be loaded after reboot
Additional info:
Please ensure that the RHEL ice driver maintainer agrees before making any change that would cause the ice driver to load DDP firmware.

Hi
I have done what Jan suggested and I worked, so I think this is not a bug
cd /lib/firmware/intel/ice
rm ice.pkg
ln -s ../ddp-comms/ice_comms-1.3.20.0.pkg ice.pkg
dracut -f
sudo reboot
dmesg | grep -i ddp
[ 6.837831] ice 0000:3b:00.0: The DDP package was successfully loaded: ICE COMMS Package version 1.3.20.0
[ 7.917696] ice 0000:3b:00.1: DDP package already present on device: ICE COMMS Package version 1.3.20.0
Correct RHEL and upstream have been configured in such a way that the default will be to load the normal base nic firmware package from linux-firmware and if the operator of the system elects to change a symlink the to load the comms firmware then this firmware will be loaded at driver initialization time.
