RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

VM XML

This bug was initially created as a copy of Bug #1887895

I am copying this bug because:

Description of problem:
Boot RT VM in RT host, then hot plug/unplug PF devices, unplug will fail.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
5.13.0-0.rc4.33.rt3.4.el9.x86_64
qemu-kvm-6.0.0-5.el9.x86_64
libvirt-7.4.0-1.el9.x86_64

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot RT VM, full xml is attached.

2. Hot plug PFs (XL710, i40e NIC), successfully.

# cat nic1.xml
<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
  <driver name='vfio'/>
  <source>
    <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
  </source>
  <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x06' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
</hostdev>

# cat nic2.xml
<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
  <driver name='vfio'/>
  <source>
    <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
  </source>
  <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x07' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
</hostdev>

In host:
# virsh attach-device rhel9.0_rt_8vcpu nic1.xml
Device attached successfully

# virsh attach-device rhel9.0_rt_8vcpu nic2.xml
Device attached successfully

In VM, the PF is plugged well:
# lspci | grep Eth
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Red Hat, Inc. Virtio network device (rev 01)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller XL710 for 40GbE QSFP+ (rev 02)
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller XL710 for 40GbE QSFP+ (rev 02)

3. Hot unplug PFs, fails. In VM, the PFs still exist in VM and not be unplugged successfully.

# virsh detach-device rhel9.0_rt_8vcpu nic1.xml
Device detached successfully

# virsh detach-device rhel9.0_rt_8vcpu nic2.xml
Device detached successfully

# lspci | grep Eth
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Red Hat, Inc. Virtio network device (rev 01)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller XL710 for 40GbE QSFP+ (rev 02)
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller XL710 for 40GbE QSFP+ (rev 02)

Additional info:
1. In RHEL(non-RT) setup, this issue cannot be triggered.

RHEL versions which work as expected:
5.13.0-0.rc4.33.el9.x86_64
qemu-kvm-6.0.0-5.el9.x86_64
libvirt-7.4.0-1.el9.x86_64

Updating assignment to match the cloned from bug 1887895 in order to ensure both bugs are addressed in both releases.

Comment 4 John Ferlan 2022-11-23 17:20:33 UTC
Marcelo - the automatic close date is approaching on this RHEL9 version of a bug you took over from mst last year.

Since QE used "copy" from and not "cloned" from the linkage to bug 1887895 got lost.

In any case, in your estimation/opinion - could this also be closed as current release? Or should we look to extend the stale date and resolve?

Comment 5 Marcelo Tosatti 2022-12-02 14:35:46 UTC
The original bug could not be reproduced:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1887895#c55

So will close this BZ one similar reasoning.

Please reopen BZ if issue can be reproduced.
