RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Steve Traylen 2021-07-08 07:45:16 UTC
Description of problem:

Recently tesseract-3.05.01-6.el8.x86_64.rpm was added to AppStream of
CentOS 8.

This does not install well with the existing EPEL8 packages.

tesseract-langpack-fra-4.0.0-6.el8.noarch
tesseract-langpack-deu-4.0.0-6.el8.noarch
tesseract-4.1.0-1.el8.x86_64
tesseract-osd-4.0.0-6.el8.noarch
tesseract-langpack-eng-4.0.0-6.el8.noarch
tesseract-tessdata-doc-4.0.0-6.el8.noarch

which are all at the 4 level.

All those langpack 4 packages are uninstallable as a result but then maybe they are included anyway.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

tesseract-3.05.01-6.el8.x86_64.rpm

How reproducible:

Additional info:

If the AppStream package could be increased to version 4 then this
would probably help things.

Bug should probably be filed with EPEL tesseract as well.

Once tesseract makes it into RHEL 8 (planned for 8.5), it will have to be retired from EPEL 8 by policy. That makes the problem "go away" for new installs, but doesn't provide an upgrade path for users that already have it installed. This predicament is being discussed further in the tesseract addition bug [0] (unfortunately in mostly in private comments).

Another point of concern is that it doesn't appear that tesseract-devel will be shipped, which is a build requirement of vapoursynth. If someone wants to request that, the procedure is documented here [1].

Comment 2 Carl George 🤠 2021-09-02 04:20:56 UTC
Great news, CentOS Stream 8 has rebased tesseract to 4.1.1-2.el8, providing a proper upgrade path from EPEL8's 4.1.0-2.el8. Additionally, tesseract-devel is now shipped as well, so existing EPEL8 packages that build require it should be unaffected once tesseract is retired from EPEL8. Are any of the missing subpackages actually needed? I don't see that they're required by anything else in EPEL8. If tesseract and tesseract-devel are sufficient, I think this bug can be closed out.

Comment 5 Jiri Kucera 2021-10-20 09:17:55 UTC
I propose to close this bug once tesseract is retired from EPEL8.
