Description Marek Greško 2021-07-28 18:03:59 UTC
Description of problem:
I have an external USB harddisk where I had UEFI fedora installation. All used to work and boot until upgrade to Fedora 34. Now I get black screen immediate after UEFI menu. There is no cursor. Display seems to be turned off. This is in the point before first reboot. The installation boots on other UEFI systems without secure boot.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
By trying to boot.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to boot from UEFI USB external HDD.
2. Press key for UEFI boot menu.
3. Choose USB HDD.
4. Black screen appears instead of reboot.

Actual results:
Black screen appears after choosing USB HDD instead of reboot.

Expected results:
After choosing USB HDD from UEFI menu reboot is expected instead of hang with black screen. After repeated UEFI menu invocation Fedora installation on the USB HDD is choosen and then grub menu appears which allows to boot the Fedora installation.

Hello,

I tried to elaborate whether the problem is secure boot related, but apparently it is not. The external HDD boots on another machine whether secure boot is enabled or not and stays on black screen before the first reboot on the Dell Latitude 5480 whether the secure boot is enabled or not. It used to work on F33 before upgrade of the installation to the F34.

The bug is still present in Fedora 35.

Comment 3 Marek Greško 2022-04-28 17:42:29 UTC
Hello,

the symptoms seems similar to bug 1955416. So this is probably problem in shim, not grub2. The bug could be closed as duplicate.

Thanks

Marek
