RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.
Bug 1993826 - content_rule_audit_basic_configuration enforces using default buffer size (8192) for audit, which isn't always suitable on busy systems

.SCAP rules now have a warning message to configure Audit log buffer for large systems The SCAP rule `xccdf_org.ssgproject.content_rule_audit_basic_configuration` now displays a performance warning that suggests users of large systems where the Audit log buffer configured by this rule might be too small and can override the custom value. The warning also describes the process to configure a larger Audit log buffer. With this enhancement, users of large systems can stay compliant and have their Audit log buffer set correctly.

Description Renaud Métrich 2021-08-16 08:08:07 UTC
This bug was initially created as a copy of Bug #1993822

I am copying this bug because:

Also applies on RHEL8

Description of problem:

The content_rule_audit_basic_configuration rule enforces having 10-basic-config.rules be the default configuration file, which sets internally the buffer to 8192:
-------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< --------
[...]
## Increase the buffers to survive stress events.
## Make this bigger for busy systems
-b 8192
[...]
-------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< --------

If the customer changes the value, the rule will fail. In theory the check should only make sure that the buffer is larger or equal to 8192.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

scap-security-guide-0.1.54-5.el8.noarch

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Modify /etc/audit/rules.d/10-basic-config.rules to increase the buffer to 16384
2. Execute xccdf_org.ssgproject.content_rule_audit_basic_configuration rule

Actual results:

Fails

Expected results:

Pass

Additional info:

Workaround is to create his own 99-custom.rules or similar file that modifies the buffer size

Comment 1 Renaud Métrich 2021-08-16 08:16:54 UTC
If you consider not changing the rule implementation to check for minimum settings instead of just comparing file contents, then please amend the 10-basic-config.rules template to tell customers not to modify the setting in that file but create another file alphanumerically sorted after this file that contains the custom setting, something like this:
-------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< --------
[...]
## Increase the buffers to survive stress events.
## Make this bigger for busy systems
## Don't modify the below value but create a file alphanumerically higher than
## "10-basic-config.rules" redefining the value, e.g. "99-custom-config.rules"
-b 8192
[...]
-------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< ---------------- 8< --------

Comment 2 Vojtech Polasek 2021-08-30 12:52:29 UTC
Hello,
thank you for raising this issue. This particular rule treats the file as one huge blob, so it can't be easily customized. The idea behind the rule is to match files provided by Audit package in /usr/share/audit/sample-rules.
Therefore, if we were about to add some explaining comment, I believe this would need to be coordinated with Audit developers as well, so that copying over the sample file does not make the rule fail.
However, I think we could add the explanation either to the rule description or into the rule warning section related to performance, I like the later approach more. This would bee modification only to the SCAP content. It would be visible in the HTML report and in the HTML guides.
Would this be feasible?

Since the problem described in this bug report should be
resolved in a recent advisory, it has been closed with a
resolution of ERRATA.
