RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description gardar.arnarsson@decode.is 2021-08-23 11:23:49 UTC
Description of problem:
Installing cockpit (cockpit-ws) adds a spam message to motd to ask the user to activate the cockpit web console with systemd.

This is usually not something that's done when installing software that requires socket/service activation.
I would consider this bad practice, there is a lot of software that requires systemd socket/service activation and just imagine if every package that does would add a motd.

I would suggest adding a message that's echoed during installation or even skip the message altogether as it should not be needed.

If a user is installing the package then they should (like with any other software) either:
* read through the documentation for the product
* know the product
* figure out from experience that there is a systemd socket that probably needs to be enabled.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
238.2

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. dnf install cockpit-ws
2. logout
3. ssh back in to server

Actual results:
New motd message is added:
`Activate the web console with: systemctl enable --now cockpit.socket`

Expected results:
No new motd should be added

This was toned down in bug 1872562 already (hence marking as a duplicate). You can also just rm the file, this is officially supported now since the fix for bug 1876848 landed. I'm afraid having the message by default is a marketing decision.

Comment 2 gardar.arnarsson@decode.is 2021-08-30 10:58:30 UTC
Thanks for confirming the suspicion that this is a marketing decision.

That being said, there must be a better way to market the product. Adding spam to motd gives the product a negative impression to users.
