Gnome Software unable to find Coptic fonts

Using Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-34-1.2.iso in qemu.

I played with emoji picker and Gnome popped up something requesting more fonts.

I clicked and then Gnome Software said:

“Unable to find the Coptic, Persian, Old (ca. 600-400 B.C.), Ugaritic you were searching for. Please see _the documentation_ for more information.”

See attached screenshot.

But we have a package with Coptic fonts:

google-noto-sans-coptic-fonts-20201206-2.fc34.noarch

Comment 2 Mike FABIAN 2021-08-31 20:24:11 UTC
I am not sure whether this is really a bug in fontconfig, I was just guessing when choosing “Component: fontconfig”.

$ fc-list | grep -i cop
/usr/share/fonts/google-noto/NotoSansCoptic-Regular.ttf: Noto Sans Coptic:style=Regular
...

$ rpm -qf /usr/share/fonts/google-noto/NotoSansCoptic-Regular.ttf
google-noto-sans-coptic-fonts-20201206-2.fc34.noarch

$ fc-list 'Noto Sans Coptic' family file lang
/usr/share/fonts/google-noto/NotoSansCoptic-Regular.ttf: Noto Sans Coptic:lang=

Nothing behind “lang=”

And there is no “cop.orth” file here:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/fontconfig/fontconfig/-/tree/main/fc-lang

So “maybe” this has something to do with fontconfig, I am not sure.

Video showing how to reproduce the Gnome Software “Unable to find the Coptic ...” error

This video shows how the Gnome Software error message

“Unable to to find the Coptic ...”

can be easily reproduced using emoji-picker.

Just open the “No, Number, Other” Unicode category in emoji-picker.

This continues to happen **even if**
google-noto-sans-coptic-fonts-20201206-2.fc34.noarch
is already installed!

Comment 4 Jens Petersen 2021-09-01 12:02:14 UTC
Maybe it is because we removed the font lang metadata from fonts packages
and we don't have a langpacks for Coptic... hmmm

Comment 5 Akira TAGOH 2021-09-28 11:25:03 UTC
What's the locale for Coptic?

If there are any resources or pointer to determine the minimal glyph covarage for Coptic, that would also helps.

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 34 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 34 on 2022-06-07.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '34'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 34 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora Linux 38 development cycle.
Changing version to 38.

Comment 9 Jens Petersen 2024-01-08 08:49:19 UTC
So there is no orth currently for Coptic?

I think the language code is 'cop'.

Comment 10 Jens Petersen 2024-01-08 08:54:53 UTC
Btw seems Liberation also has some Coptic coverage.
