RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Andy Walsh 2021-10-06 15:05:17 UTC
Description of problem:
In relation to bz1983749, it was discovered that a dependency only on 'kernel-core' is insufficient in all scenarios and that 'kernel-modules' should also be listed as a dependency to ensure a system remains functional across updates.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
kmod-kvdo-6.2.*.*

How reproducible:
Using the reproducer of 1983749, always.

Steps to Reproduce (from bz1983749):
1. Boot an x86_64 libvirt virtualized system from the RHEL 8.1 from the GA ISO image:
7851737088 Nov 12 2019 rhel-8.1-x86_64-dvd.iso
# sha256sum rhel-8.1-x86_64-dvd.iso
2323ad44d75df1a1e83048a34e196ddfedcd6c0f6c49ea59bf08095e3bb9ef65 rhel-8.1-x86_64-dvd.iso
2. In the interactive installation program, make your storage choices and in the software selection screen, select the "Server" software environment.
3. Boot the system. It will be running with the kernel version 4.18.0-147.
4. Right after booting, run:
# yum group list
It will show that the "Server" environment group is installed.
5. Attach the system to a repo source, e.g. a Satellite server with the latest packages.
6. Now, run and confirm with "y":
# yum group install server
This will show ca. 98 packages which will be updated and one package which will be installed (kernel-core-4.18.0-147.51.1.el8_1)
7. Reboot the system.

Actual results:
kernel-core is installed.

Expected results:
kernel-core and kernel-modules should be installed and the system should finish booting properly.
