Description of problem: Firmware file 'ctefx.bin' missing from /lib/firmware, stopping audio working. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Creative sound cards which use the CA0132 firmware will not produce audio unless the 'ctefx.bin' file is present in /lib/firmware Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install fresh copy of Fedora 35 2. Try to play audio. (nothing happens) Actual results: No sound is played, despite output being configured correctly via Settings and Alsamixer Expected results: Audio should play as expected. Additional info: ctefx.bin is part of the alsa-firmware package. This should probably shipped with the base Fedora install (if possible) or the user is given the option to install it upon first boot.
We have alsa-sof-firmware in the hardware-support comps group (for x86_64), but alsa-firmware is only in the 'audio' group which no default package set includes. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this split is, but if real-world consumer hardware doesn't work without something that's in a package we don't install by default, that seems like a problem.
The Creative hardware is not used by major count of users now. I propose to keep things ASIS (it may be documented, of course). We already install a bunch of firmware files.
This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 35 is nearing its end of life. Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 35 on 2022-12-13. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a 'version' of '35'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version' to a later Fedora Linux version. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version prior to this bug being closed.
