Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Jan Stodola 2021-12-01 12:10:10 UTC
Description of problem:
Free space available in squashfs-root/LiveOS/rootfs.img inside install.img dropped below 500 MB on ppc64le and 85% of space is now used.

Reporting this bug to avoid unexpected behavior when free space is low in the installation environment, like we saw in bug 1661169 in the past.
Here is how free space was getting lower over RHEL-8 releases on ppc64le:

                  Size Used Avail Use%
8.0.0 2.9G 1.9G 1021M 66%
8.1.0 2.9G 2.1G 799M 73%
8.2.0 2.9G 2.1G 814M 73%
8.3.0 2.9G 2.2G 716M 76%
8.4.0 2.9G 2.3G 643M 79%
8.5.0 2.9G 2.4G 500M 84%
8.6.0-20211130.1 2.9G 2.5G 458M 85%

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
8.6.0-20211130.1
lorax-28.14.63-1.el8

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. unsquashfs <COMPOSE_PATH>/BaseOS/ppc64le/os/images/install.img
2. mount -o ro,loop squashfs-root/LiveOS/rootfs.img ./
3. df -h

Actual results:
Free space below 500 MB

Expected results:
Safe amount of free space, the size of rootfs.img is increased - proposing 4 GB for the image.

Additional info:

Comment 1 Brian Lane 2021-12-01 17:53:13 UTC
Note that this can be adjust by rel-eng using --rootfs-size instead of changing the default.

Comment 2 Jan Stodola 2021-12-02 09:52:22 UTC
I would prefer this is changed in lorax so that nobody needs to use --rootfs-size and the defaults produce a reliable installation media.
