unicode spec.

Description of problem:
Lohit Punjabi Font does not recognize some subjoined consonants which should be recognized per Unicode specs and are recognised by other fonts from other vendors.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
All

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to type subjoined consonants with characters ਕ,ਗ,ਚ,ਤ,ਥ,ਟ,ਠ,ਦ,ਧ,ਨ
2. It shows as ਪ੍ਕ , ਪ੍ਗ, ਪ੍ਚ......instead of these letters showing properly at the bottom of preceding character.

Actual results:ਪ੍ਕ , ਪ੍ਗ, ਪ੍ਚ.

Expected results: letters showing properly at the bottom of preceding character.

Additional info: Related Unicode document attached. Raavi and Ravi font from Microsoft render it correctly.

Comment 1 Jens Petersen 2022-03-30 03:37:14 UTC
Note that we have already switched the default Punjabi font in Fedora to
google-noto-sans-gurmukhi-vf-fonts some time ago.

Probably better to report this to https://github.com/lohit-fonts/lohit-gurmukhi-fonts
though right now we don't have an active maintainer unfortunately.

Comment 2 Parminder Lehal 2022-03-31 04:02:27 UTC
google-noto-sans-gurmukhi fonts suffer from almost same flaws. Please, see attached pictures..or you can see the text in the gurmukhi text in the comment using noto fonts and attched font file( attached to explain the issue ). also, see attached images to see the difference.

noto sans gurmukhi issue

Comment 6 Ben Cotton 2022-11-29 17:35:06 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 35 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 35 on 2022-12-13.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '35'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 35 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

Comment 7 Parminder Lehal 2022-11-29 17:53:58 UTC
The problem is with the font package which is part of all the Redhat offerings including Redhat enterprise so this automated closing ritual without even reading the bug won't help anyone. It only dissuades users from reporting the bugs. I reported the bug referring to the OS version where "I" found it. The same font is used in other distributions so it is in all the distros.

Comment 8 Jens Petersen 2022-12-12 05:30:07 UTC
We have basically switched Fedora (and RHEL 9) to use google-noto-sans-gurmukhi-vf-fonts by default.
So I highly recommend reporting this also to https://github.com/notofonts/gurmukhi/issues .

Indeeed, which is why I have opened https://github.com/lohit-fonts/lohit-gurmukhi-fonts/issues/1 upstream to track this.
