Hi Segio.

libavc1394 looks like an abandoned project. Is it really convenient?

Comment 4 Sergio Basto 2022-01-22 19:14:33 UTC

Firewire is mostly legacy at this point, but usage is out there (existing video hardware such as cameras and editing equipment), and various packages still (try to) support firewire devices, although I think most agree the real world usage numbers are on a steady slope downward as those devices reach EOL. I will note that Apple still sells a thunderbolt to firewire adapter to support their customers who have such devices.

The higher level AV/C API abstraction that libavc1394 implements on top of libraw1394 avoids the need for every app do their own implementation (standing on the shoulders of others....).  It is also functionally stable, so I would not expect many updates to the code itself.

At some point the Linux kernel will drop firewire support.  Until then, supporting the user space libraries is, arguably, desirable for at least some in the community, but we have no way to know how many some really is.

Could we get an EPEL8 branch as well? It builds fine there too. Thanks.
