Well, normally I would ask you to request this of upstream, but... leafpad hasn't had any development in 12 years, so I'm afraid you are just out of luck. ;( 

You could try contacting the maintainer: http://savannah.nongnu.org/users/tarot and see if they are still alive/willing to do anything here.

Thank you for the location!  I never would have found it myself and I did look.  I posted the request to them.
