RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Davide Caratti 2022-01-19 16:50:09 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #2042104 +++

wpa_supplicant-2.10 is out, and it should be included in RHEL as a replacement of the current release (an unofficial snapshot released to allow early testing of H2E functionality, see bz2007333).

--- Additional comment from Davide Caratti on 2022-01-18 20:09:08 UTC ---

@kbenoit: one of the most significative differences with the snapshot release is [1], that should allow using legacy cryptographic function without explicitly loading the legacy provider in openssl.cnf

Providing an ack, but keep in mind that this is coming in very close to the line so in the best of circumstances for testing this is going to get verified right before the cutoff where blockers or exceptions are required.

Comment 1 Ken Benoit 2022-01-19 16:55:30 UTC
Just to reiterate in this bug as well, I'm providing the ack but this is very close to the exception/blocker-only line, so this is risky.

hello Ken,

yes, also I would have liked 2.10 to pop up earlier. However, looking at the git log from the latest 2.9 snapshot we have in RHEL and 2.10, the list of changes looks short and relatively harmless. One of the most relevant things are

58bbcfa31 OpenSSL: Update security level drop for TLS 1.0/1.1 with OpenSSL 3.0
682fce579 OpenSSL: Fix compressed form encoding for subjectPublicKey with 3.0
ff2eccbdf OpenSSL: Load legacy provider when needed for OpenSSL 3.0
ddcdd6286 OpenSSL: Clean up EVP_PKEY_get{0,1}_EC_KEY() use
384aa245e OpenSSL: Speed up crypto_ec_point_compute_y_sqr()

that resumes some work Jouni did to work correctly with OpenSSL-3.0, and should allow us reverting the quirks we had in the selftests that globally enabled the OpenSSL legacy provider to compute DES / MD4 / RC4, and the following commits

8c502336d EAP-pwd: Derive the y coordinate for PWE with own implementation
6c380f4c8 SAE: Derive the y coordinate for PWE with own implementation

that includes a security update for the "dragonfly" problem (see [1]).

https://w1.fi/security/2022-1/.

I will push the code and the build ASAP.

thanks!

Ran wireless regression testing against RHEL-9.0.0-20220216.0 (wpa_supplicant-2.10-2.el9) against recent wireless cards (AX201, AX211, QCA6390). Testing passed without issue. Verifying as SanityOnly.
