Hello, I'm working on packaging rescrobbled for Fedora, but unfortunately there are several dependencies missing (not in the Fedora repo) or those that are there aren't at the required level for rescrobbled. I've just started to slog through this and notify-rust is one such example. Can someone please assist in getting these packages upgraded? Alternatively, I'd be more than happy to upgrade these packages myself as I encounter them, but I need to be given access. Also, as I create the new packages, I'm going to need someone to review the packages so I can get them posted. Thanks very much!
Hi, updating notify-rust from 4.5.5 to 4.5.8 won't be so easy for now, because the new version pulls in new / incompatible versions of the zbus (2) / zvariant (3) stack, which in turn require other updates, and since some crates are still using zbus 1 and zvariant 2 we'd need to create at least (!) four compat packages. If you don't *explicitly* need notify-rust > 4.5.5 (i.e. the crate that depends on it uses something that was only added between 4.5.5 and 4.5.8), you could try downgrading the dependency from 4.5.8 (or whatever it is) to 4.5.5 for now. Since that's the "patch" level, that should work. I assume the crate that depends such a new version has something like the zealos dependabot enabled in their GitHub repo, which often needlessly bumps dependencies of versions even at the patch level (which usually doesn't make *any* sense for stuff that's developed and released with SemVer in mind).
Hi Fabio, thank you so much for the quick response. Rescrobbled specifically calls out version 4.5.6 so if you're saying that includes new incompatible versions of zbus and zvariant it isn't going to work. Seems like rust dependencies are a mess if we have packages that require old versions and that is preventing us from using packages that require new versions. How would you ever be able to move forward? Anyway, I'll continue my work using COPR but at some point I want to get it moved to the production repositories.
You seem to have misunderstood me. I'll be able to move forward with updating notify-rust eventually, but given that this involves conpat packages and affects mutliple other packages I just didn't have the time to do that. also, the commit message here suggests to me that rescrobbled doesn't actually *need* 4.5.6 but would be OK with any 4.5 or even 4.x.y version: https://github.com/InputUsername/rescrobbled/commit/b92608b8b72cee030897a555fd87ab74d3f36d56 Which is why I suggested that you patch cargo.toml for now to lower the required version temporarily, until I have the time to update notify-rust.
I'll double check with upstream. My thinking was that you said the new version was incompatible. So I was thinking if something was using the new version it couldn't use the older version. I volunteered to assist. You don't have to do it all yourself.
No ... the incompatibility between zbus 1 and zbus 2 is not exposed in the API of notify-rust. It's an internal Implementation detail. Which is why I assume you can just downgrade the notify-rust dependency in rescrobbled from 4.5.6 to 4.5.5 without needing to do any other changes.
OK, Thanks for the clarification! Much appreciated!
No problem. If you have any more questions regarding Rust packaging, we usually hang out in the #fedora-rust channel on IRC or in the "Fedora Rust" channel on Matrix.
