I hadn't updated clap to v4 yet because all Fedora packages that I know of were still using v3. So thanks for letting me know that there's actually something that started to need it - I'll look into updating clap et al. to v4 (and adding compat packages for v3) next week. Since half a dozen packages are involved, and I haven't checked if there are any new dependencies yet, this might take a few days, if any package reviews are needed. If this situation comes up again (crate packaged for Fedora too old for one of your packages), please mark the bug as blocking the blocked thing. Otherwise I won't even know that somebody is waiting for a specific update, and treat it as "low priority".

Any updates here? By policy, CoreOS can't move our upstream packages to clap 4 until it's packaged in Fedora. That currently affects two packages and will affect a third one soon.
As mentioned previously, clap 4 uses features of cargo that are not currently supported by our Rust packaging tools. The affected code in the rust2rpm Python package is awful and it's not really possible to just change it to support these new features, so I've been working on a complete rewrite that is more flexible (and also better tested). I've been working on this for a while - parts are already done, and my progress can be seen here: https://pagure.io/fedora-rust/cargo2rpm The goal is to replace low-level functionality from rust2rpm with the new code from cargo2rpm, and at that point, the update to clap 4 will be un-blocked. I'm sorry that this is taking so long, but I was basically the only person working on this tooling for the past year, but I was busy with $LIFE - and I'm not getting paid to work on this stuff, after all ;) If you cannot wait until support for this feature lands, then a workaround would be to build with vendored dependencies temporarily. > By policy, CoreOS can't move our upstream packages to clap 4 until it's packaged in Fedora. By the way, this is kind of a broken policy in many cases. For libraries where your packages are the only dependents, this will basically result in them never being updated to new breaking versions in Fedora (unless you specifically ask for it). We only update libraries to API-incompatible versions on demand, as doing that proactively doesn't make sense - it would result in new version X of the package being unused, and a need for a compat version for old version X-1 (i.e. maintaining two packages instead of one, with one of them being unused).
Okay, thanks for the update. > By the way, this is kind of a broken policy in many cases. For libraries > where your packages are the only dependents, this will basically result in > them never being updated to new breaking versions in Fedora (unless you > specifically ask for it). We know that in this case we'd need to either ping the BZ or handle the dependency update ourselves. But I'd say the policy is working as intended. If we had updated clap upstream, our upstreams would currently be unshippable in Fedora without vendoring dependencies, which the Rust SIG has objected to us doing.
