gnome-text-editor-43~alpha1-1.fc37.x86_64

Preedit is disappearing faster than one can do anything in gnome-text-editor.

Video showing the problem by comparing typing into gedit with typing into gnome-text-editor

In the video one can see me typing on an XFCE desktop into gedit and gnome-text-editors using the input methods:

- ibus-anthy (Japanese - Anthy)
- ibus-libpinyin (Chinese - Intelligent Pinyin)
- ibus-typing-booster (Other - Typing Booster
- ibus-m17n (Other - t-latn-post (m17n))

In gedit these input methods all work fine.

But in gnome-text-editor, the preedit vanishes quickly, usually so quickly that it is hard to see that there was anything at all.

With “ibus-m17n (Other - t-latn-post (m17n))” there is an additional problem:

Typing u" should give an ü. This works in gedit.

But in gnome-text-editor, after typing u" one sees "u. The " is already committed, it has “normal” colours, the u is shown with a red background and green foreground (This is because I did choose these colours in the settings of “ibus-m17n (Other - t-latn-post (m17n))” to make the preedit more easily visible). So the " has already been committed and the u follows and is in preedit. After just waiting for a while and not typing anything else, the u is committed as well (colours for the u change to normal).

The video shows an XFCE desktop but the problem is the same on Gnome Xorg. As can be seen in the video

GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus

is set!

Comment 3 Jens Petersen 2022-09-20 03:55:41 UTC
Upstream bug is https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-text-editor/-/issues/454

Comment 4 fujiwara 2022-09-20 05:02:13 UTC
I think the GTK4 patch should be deleted for Fedora 37.

Comment 5 fujiwara 2022-09-20 05:30:28 UTC
The original issue was GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus. Reverting the category.

Comment 6 Aoife Moloney 2023-11-23 00:23:16 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 37 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 37 on 2023-12-05.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '37'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version. Note that the version field may be hidden.
Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see it.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 37 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

Comment 7 Aoife Moloney 2023-12-05 23:27:22 UTC
Fedora Linux 37 entered end-of-life (EOL) status on None.

Fedora Linux 37 is no longer maintained, which means that it
will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we
are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora Linux
please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Note that the version
field may be hidden. Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see
the version field.

If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against an
active release.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
