RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description of problem:
RHEL7 UEFI guest turns into black after v2v conversion

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
virt-v2v-2.0.7-6.el9.x86_64
libguestfs-1.48.4-2.el9.x86_64
guestfs-tools-1.48.2-5.el9.x86_64

nbdkit-server-1.30.8-1.el9.x86_64
libnbd-1.12.6-1.el9.x86_64

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Convert a RHEL7 UEFI guest from VMware to libvirt by v2v
# virt-v2v -ic vpx://root.213.107/data/10.73.212.38/?no_verify=1 -it vddk -io vddk-libdir=/home/vddk7.0.3 -io  vddk-thumbprint=87:F9:29:E7:33:DE:34:68:74:3F:6A:C9:61:96:C3:51:E2:1E:EA:2B -ip /home/passwd -of qcow2 esx7.0-rhel7.9-uefi-enable-secureboot -v -x |& tee > v2v-convert-rhel7-uefi-guest-to-libvirt.log
█ 100% [****************************************]

2.Check guest after v2v finishing conversion, but guest turns into black after powering on, pls refer to screenshot 'rhel7-uefi-guest-console-black.png'

Actual results:
As above description

Expected results:
Checkpoints of RHEL7 UEFI guest are passed after v2v conversion

Comment 2 Laszlo Ersek 2022-09-30 08:00:56 UTC
(1) forked from <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2124193#c26> and onwards)

(2) Gerd said in <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2124193#c32>:

> Note the module has been renamed to just 'bochs' in recent kernels,
> so you probably want add both names to the check list.

(3) My (much) earlier statement that this issue was a RHEL-7.6 guest kernel bug, fixed in RHEL-7.9, was incorrect. I was misled by the fact that installing the RHEL-7.9 GA kernel in the *converted* (output) domain had restored "rhgb" to functional state. In fact what happened was that the RHEL-7.9 guest kernel installation triggered an initrd rebuild (just like "plymouth-set-default-theme -R charge" in <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2124193#c28>), and that masked the actual problem. It's great that mxie went on to install the RHEL-7.9 kernel on the *source* (vmware) guest side, and that she then redid the conversion; that disproved my theory.

Here's the plymouthd (plymouth-0.8.9-0.34.20140113.el7.x86_64) crash backtrace:

In ply_renderer_open_input_source(), we have

  renderer->input_source_is_open = renderer->plugin_interface->open_input_source (renderer->backend,

And the function pointer "renderer->plugin_interface->open_input_source" is 0x000055ce0f191540, which apparently points to outer space.

There are three "open_input_source" implementations (more precisely, three plugin interfaces):

  plugins/renderers/frame-buffer/plugin.c
  plugins/renderers/x11/plugin.c
  plugins/renderers/drm/plugin.c

I *think* the problem is that one of these (the DRM one?) gets initially set up, but then potentially unloaded (?), due to the bochs_drm kernel driver not being present in the initrd. Then plymouth leaves some invalid pointers around, and we get the crash.

Comment 4 Laszlo Ersek 2022-09-30 09:30:21 UTC
I can reproduce this locally. In fact in my case it seems to be worse -- I don't get a converted guest that boots to a blank screen but otherwise fine; I get a stuck guest (with spinning CPU) that doesn't seem to quiesce at all.

Comment 5 Laszlo Ersek 2022-09-30 11:32:14 UTC
Yup, including "bochs-drm" (NOTE: *NOT* "bochs_drm"!!!) in the initrd solves the problem for me.
