Description Robert Mader 2022-12-18 13:39:03 UTC
Description of problem:
Having xdg-desktop-portal-kde installed causes start-up issues in Gnome-Shell sessions. It's also started (while xdg-desktop-portal-wlr does not), and times out after ca. 30 seconds. However, until the timeout, many apps are prevented from starting, such as Firefox, all GTK4 apps I've tested etc.

Some apps, like gnome-terminal, are not affected.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
5.26.4-1

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use Fedora Workstation
2. Additionally to Gnome install KDE with xdg-desktop-portal-kde
3. logout/restart
4. log into Gnome session

Actual results:
1. xdg-desktop-portal-kde is reported as getting started in the journal.
2. Many apps get blocked from starting until 30 second timeout is hit

Expected results:
1. xdg-desktop-portal-kde is not started, just like xdg-desktop-portal-wlr
2. Apps are not blocked from starting

Additional info:
I think this behavior started a couple of month ago on Fedora 36 already, but can't pinpoint any more.

Looks like it gets blocked on some DBus call that times out. Would be good to find out what portal is causing this. Can you check DBus communication around the time when portals are initialized? Simply killing all xdg-desktop-portal* processes and starting /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal should work while running dbus-monitor.

Do you have these installed?

xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

xdg-desktop-portal-gnome ought to be installed by default if you are using GNOME Shell (xdg-desktop-portal-gtk is not needed)

Comment 5 Robert Mader 2023-03-28 16:33:13 UTC
Yes, both are installed by default (and xdg-desktop-portal-gtk appears to still be needed - at least gnome-shell depends on it. AFAIK xdg-desktop-portal-gnome just extends, but not fully replaces it).

Comment 6 Jonas Ådahl 2023-04-12 09:35:00 UTC
A fix in xdg-desktop-portal-kde to not stall might need https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/pull/985 to let some other portal take over, but might not be crucial if it happens to be the global shortcuts portal that causes the stalls.

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 37 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 37 on 2023-12-05.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '37'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version. Note that the version field may be hidden.
Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see it.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 37 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

Comment 8 Aoife Moloney 2023-12-06 11:44:57 UTC
