The desktop file works fine. I have no idea how to create the Appdata file and what is the benefit of having them.

The appdata file makes it appear nicely in GNOME Software. See e.g. https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/slic3r/blob/rawhide/f/slic3r.appdata.xml (I ma not claiming this is a state of the art appdata file, just an example).
