Description of problem: I'm running Fedora 38 on my workstation. In the last week or two I've started to have bad problems where the workstation seizes up. The screen is immobile. Sometimes I cannot log in remotely via ssh (it has an sshd running); sometimes when I can log in, I cannot run simple commands (e.g., /usr/bin/who crashes). I think the gnome-shell process is still there but nothing is working. The problem seems to happen mostly when I use 'evince' to read a PDF. If I use the mouse to scroll, the system freezes. Once I wasn't touching 'evince' but modified the PDF file it was looking at, and when 'evince' started rerendering the file the system froze. This has the feel of the graphics subsystem somehow tickling a kernel bug and making the whole system go catatonic. I am listing 'evince' as the culprit but I have my doubts that it is the actual culprit. I encountered this problem with GNOME on Wayland; I tried using GNOME Classic, and GNOME on Xorg but that didn't help. I attempted to file a bug report with the Fedora bug-reporting tool, but it doesn't work, perhaps because the OS is freezing so hard that logs don't work. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 38 with current patches evince 44.1-1.fc38 My workstation is an ASLab Marquis 822-T with an Asus ENGTS450 GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) graphics card and an AMD Phenom II X4 910e CPU and 8 GiB of ECC RAM. How reproducible: Run 'evince' on a PDF and mouse around for a while. Maybe it will freeze; maybe it won't. Actual results: See the PDF. Expected results: The entire desktop freezes. Additional info:
This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.
