Description Jordan Ditzler 2023-07-17 15:24:57 UTC
I'm unable to use a squashfs image (mksquashfs <dir> <img>) for rhel 7.7 to live PXe boot. This is a not for an installation. I am using the default 7.7 vmlinuz and 7.7 initrd.img from the original RHEL 7.7 installation ISO img. I'm wondering if I need to add any dracut (?) modules to the default 7.7 initrd.img or maybe I'm just missing a kernel argument. I am able to use the NFS root option without issue, but I want to move to the squashfs method due to security reasons. RHEL 8.2 works using both NFS root and squashfs, but can't get the RHEL 7.7 version working. I am using legacy (pxelinux) booting for RHEL 7.7 and efi (grub) booting for RHEL 8.2.

The pxelinux.cfg/default for using the squashfs is:

label 4
     MENU LABEL ^4) RHEL 7.7 - Squash
     KERNEL rhel-7.7/vmlinuz
     INITRD rhel-7.7/initrd.img
     IPAPPEND 2
     APPEND root=live:http://17.76.11.2/rhel77_minimal.squashfs rw ip=dhcp selinux=0 3 console=ttyS0,115200

I am able to fully PXe boot using an NFS root without issue (the root directory used to create the squashfs):

label 3
     MENU LABEL ^3) RHEL 7.7 - Debug
     KERNEL rhel-7.7/vmlinuz
     INITRD rhel-7.7/initrd.img
     IPAPPEND 2
     APPEND root=nfs:17.76.11.2:/home/images/rhel-7.7/TEST rw ip=dhcp selinux=0 3 console=ttyS0,115200

I am able to boot the RHEL 8.2 version of the squashfs without any real issue. The vmlinuz and initrd.img used are the default 8.2 ones found inside the installation ISO img. The grub.cfg for using squashfs is:

menuentry 'RHEL 8.2' {
     linuxefi rhel-8.2/vmlinuz root=live:http://17.76.11.2/rhel82_minimal.squashfs rw selinux=0 3 console=ttyS0,115200
     initrdefi rhel-8.2/initrd.img
}

Weirdly enough, I can use the 8.2 vmlinuz and initrd.img to boot the 7.7 squashfs img, but since the kernel is newer it's largely unusable. This makes me think there's a missing dracut module in the 7.7 initrd.img that the 8.2 image has, but I'm not sure.

Here's the lsinitrd -m of the 7.7 initrd.img:

I will start by saying that it is pretty unlikely we will fix something officially here. RHEL-7.7 is no longer supported. The only version left is 7.9, and even there we are mostly just fixing CVEs. And we are not fixing something without a customer ticket.

But if you want to dig deeper here, I would start with adding rd.debug to kernel cmdline and comparing 7 and 8 behaviour.

If you feel adventurous, you can try to recreate rhel7 initrd with rhel8 dracut. I think that rhel8's dracut should not have any extra dependencies, so in theory you might be able to copy the rpms to rhel7. Or maybe it would be enough just to try using relevant modules from a newer dracut, they should be backwards compatible. (Of course, all of this is totally unsupported).

Comment 4 Jordan Ditzler 2023-07-17 19:18:25 UTC
Yeah I was afraid of that...

I did try to add some dracut modules to the base rhel 7.7 initrd img, but I believe dracut is regenerating the initrd (or initramfs I'm still learning) instead of the actual img I pass as an argument.

dracut -f -v --add systemd rh77_initrd.img $(uname -r)

I run this on a standalone RHEL 7.7 OS and the file output is completely different than the original (internal file structure and all), and I don't know how to tell dracut to just "add this specific kernel module to the existing image". Even if I tell it to just install a single module, it attempts to install everything possible, which also doesn't make any sense to me.

The original initrd is structured as so:

initrd.img
   <compressed img>
      dev
      etc
      proc
      ...

But the new initrd has a different layout:

initrd.img
   early_cpio
   kernel
      x86
         microcode
            AuthenticAMD.bin
            GenuineIntel.bin

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I just want to add some dracut modules to an already existing initrd img (of which I believe are necessary to get a squashfs img to PXe boot). If what I'm asking for isn't possible, how do I re-generate an initrd img, structurally similar to the base RHEL 7.7 one (found in the installer ISO), from scratch?

Yeah this will create a new initrd with the new of the old one

By default, dracut creates initrd with two layers, first is the firmware for CPU, so kernel can load it early, in case an update is needed. After that, you have the actual initrd. This can be turned off with --no-early-microcode.
Btw https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2037313 might be helpful a bit.

Yeah this is almost impossible. In theory, you can do it by hand, initrd is a simple cpio archive, so you can unpack it, modify and put back together.

If what I'm asking for isn't possible, how do I

The hackish way I would try first is simply calling lsinitrd on the current initrd, in the header, it will tell you what dracut options were used to build the initrd.
The proper way is to use Lorax https://weldr.io/lorax/

Comment 6 Jordan Ditzler 2023-07-18 13:27:37 UTC
Thanks for the guidance. I think I should be able to go from here. I've been trying to get this working all day yesterday (remaking the initrd img from scratch and adding to existing imgs), but no luck so far.

I'll look into Lorax as well. I think it's possible to do what I want, but I don't think it'll be as straight forward as I was hoping lol.

Comment 7 Lukáš Nykrýn 2023-07-19 14:33:14 UTC
Ok, closing this as EOL. As I mentioned rhel-7.7 is not supported anymore.
