Adam,

Not that I could get. I did try booting both default entries. The USB drive would go active and then a blank screen.

When removing rhgb/quiet, GRUB would note "booting a command list", the USB drive would go active and then hang there.

Comment 6 Adam Williamson 2023-08-31 00:17:44 UTC
Thanks...do you happen to know what's the most recent image that *does* boot for you?

Comment 7 Jonathan Steffan 2023-08-31 00:20:35 UTC
Adam,

I'm bisecting through now to find the last working.

Glad to report that Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-39-20230830.n.0.iso is not affected by this.

Comment 8 Jonathan Steffan 2023-08-31 00:53:50 UTC
Adam,

Last working image is Fedora-Workstation-Live-Rawhide-20230829.n.0.

I have re-verified Fedora-Workstation-Live-Rawhide-20230830.n.0 isn't working on the affected hardware. From the Fedora-Workstation-Live-Rawhide-20230830.n.0 compose report these updated packages stuck out to investigate:

anaconda-39.33-1.fc40
glibc-2.38.9000-6.fc40
kernel-6.6.0-0.rc0.20230829git1c59d383390f.59.fc40
lorax-39.4-2.fc40

It doesn't seem like the kernel comes alive so that is what I'm suspecting right now.

Comment 9 romulasry 2023-08-31 01:04:03 UTC
Isn't this a grub issue?

Comment 10 Adam Williamson 2023-08-31 01:09:32 UTC
For you? No idea, since we don't have enough information. for Jonathan? Almost certainly not, as grub did not change in the last day. It's almost certainly the kernel for Jonathan.

Can you try booting https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/compose/rawhide/Fedora-Rawhide-20230828.n.0/compose/Workstation/x86_64/iso/Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-Rawhide-20230828.n.0.iso and see if it works? If it does, the problem is almost certainly the kernel for you too.

Jonathan, you can also try booting with 'debug' on the off chance that gives us more info (as well as removing 'rhgb' and 'quiet')...

Comment 11 Jonathan Steffan 2023-08-31 02:13:58 UTC
Adam,

No change booting with kernel arg 'debug' and removing the other options.

However, I did a spin with all updates except the latest kernel and it works as expected. 6.5.0-57.fc40.x86_64 Rawhide guest fully updated, a simple restricted mock config, minor kickstart modifications and the produced live image works.

mock (for this case I don't need the kernel in the chroot and the guest kernel matches):
include('/etc/mock/fedora-rawhide-x86_64.cfg')
config_opts['dnf.conf'] += """
[main]
excludepkgs=kernel*6.6.0*
"""

kickstart (5383203 is the first build root I randomly found that was recent and had the last kernel):
repo --name="rawhide" --mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=rawhide&arch=$basearch --excludepkgs=kernel*6.6.0* --cost=1
repo --name="koji-5383203" --baseurl=https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/repos/f40-build/5383203/x86_64/ --cost=10

I've installed F38 and upgraded to Rawhide on the impacted hardware. I'm booting kernel-6.4.12-200.fc38.x86_64 and have been installing and testing the Rawhide 6.6.x series and so far none of those kernels are booting.

To be clear, I'm using kernel-6.4.12-200.fc38.x86_64 to manage the system.

I have boot tested all of the kernel-6.6.0 builds for fc40 and it hangs just like the live image.

Comment 15 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-02 22:05:51 UTC
I tried booting with enabling as much debugging as I could find as kernel args and still no additional details. https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.html

debug loglevel=8 acpi.debug_layer=0x2 acpi.debug_level=0xffffffff apic=debug debug_boot_weak_hash debug_objects debugpat dynamic_debug.verbose=3 dyndbg="file init/* +p #cmt ; func parse_one +p" early_ioremap_debug earlyprintk=vga efi=debug initcall_debug keep_bootcon lsm.debug memblock=debug mminit_loglevel=4 mtrr=debug pnp.debug=1 sched_verbose show_lapic=all udbg-immortal unwind_debug

I confirmed that CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK and CONFIG_DYNAMIC_DEBUG are enabled. Is there anything else I should try?

Comment 16 Adam Williamson 2023-09-02 22:22:24 UTC
Not that I know of, but at this point it's probably worth reporting this upstream, to bugzilla.kernel.org or LKML...someone there should hopefully be able to provide better guidance.

Comment 17 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-03 03:30:35 UTC
Okay, I'll start working on that.

I can confirm that building mainline (6.5.0) with the kernel config from the running system (i.e. `make localmodconfig`) works. Using the same technique with linux-next (6.5.0-next-20230831) the system doesn't boot. I've still not gotten it to tell me why so I'll just go through the process of finding the last working commit and report upstream.

Comment 18 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-03 06:43:53 UTC
I've been able to reproduce the boot failure with kernel 6.5.0-rc5-next-20230809.

The last working kernel for this hardware is 6.5.0-rc5-next-20230808.

Okay I will test them when they finsih downloading. Just tested the current iso for today will try when they finish downloading. Ty.

Comment 21 romulasry 2023-09-06 22:48:46 UTC
None of them work. All get stuck at grub> command line.

Comment 22 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-07 21:18:16 UTC
Ryan,

Hmm, I would have expected at least one of them to work. It looks like your hardware boots with 6.5.0-0.rc7.20230821gitf7757129e3de.50.fc39.x86_64 (https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=2277075) which was tagged after the 6.5.0-rc5-next-20230809 version my hardware stopped booting with. I'll try this tag specifically in a bit.

Since you have a booting system, will you please let us know what the last kernel is that is working for you and when it stopped booting? Locally installing and boot testing the kernel is enough as this does not appear to be live image related (at least not for me).

Comment 23 romulasry 2023-09-07 21:35:36 UTC
I am not using the worksation iso, I am using the server or custom iso. I can't get it to work when I use it via the usb, it only goes to grub.

Comment 24 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-13 00:55:02 UTC
Ryan,

Your issue is unrelated to what I'm working on debugging it seems. We should split that out to a different BZ.

Comment 25 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-13 00:55:32 UTC
I've been building and then trying to boot each linux-next tag since next-20230809 and started looking at all of the commits merged between next-20230808..next-20230809. I was able to get some debugging information after learning more about kernel debugging during "The Linux Foundation's: Mentorship Session: Linux Kernel Debugging Tricks of the Trade" from today. The main thing that got it booting was "debug kgdboc=kbd nokaslr" and I added more to try to get as much detail from the boot as possible.

I've built 6.6.0-rc1 and booted it with: BOOT_IMAGE=(hd0,gpt2)/vmlinuz-6.6.0-rc1 root=UUID=88bfe01c-0878-4864-bf50-6c372bd1ffef ro rootflags=subvol=root crashkernel=1G-4G:192M,4G-64G:256M,64G-:512M debug loglevel=8 acpi.debug_layer=0x2 acpi.debug_level=0xffffffff apic=debug debug_boot_weak_hash debug_objects early_ioremap_debug earlyprintk=vga efi=debug initcall_debug keep_bootcon memblock=debug kgdboc=kbd nokaslr

The main findings are multiple mm/early_ioremap.c warnings (see attached full boot log for them all):

Sep 12 18:38:22 fedora kernel: __early_ioremap(0x0000000088ff7000, 00001000) [1] => 00000000 + ffffffffff240000

Comment 27 Jonathan Steffan 2023-09-13 01:05:16 UTC
Booting the latest rawhide kernel 6.6.0-0.rc0.20230904git708283abf896.6.fc40.x86_64 fails to boot without the debug options and shows the same warning.

6.6.0-0.rc0.20230904git708283abf896.6.fc40.x86_64 debug boot log

Comment 29 Jonathan Steffan 2023-11-25 21:20:38 UTC
This hardware boots correctly with the 6.6.2-201.fc39.x86_64 kernel in updates-testing. It seems like this issue has been resolved.
