Description Stéphane Daviet 2023-11-11 20:35:02 UTC
1. Description of problem:

After updating to the 6.5.x kernel, computer cannot boot on any 6.5.x version. No problem when booting back to the 6.4.15 one. Hardware system diagnostic and everything is right. Upgrading to Fedora 39 doesn't solve the problem.

Two error messages in the logs BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:00000000a3d60a4f type:MM_ANONPAGES val:1 and kernel BUG at lib/string_helpers.c:1031!.

2. Version-Release number of the kernel: kernel-6.5.11-300.fc39

3. Kernel version on which the issue first appeared: kernel-6.5.6-200.fc38

4. Steps to reproduce the issue:
  1. Boot under any of the 6.5.x kernels series,
  2. The issue occurs in the boot process.

5. Occurrence of the issue on the latest Rawhide kernel: Not happening on 6.7.0-0.rc0.20231109git6bc986ab839c.12.fc40.x86_64

6. Are you running any modules that not shipped with directly Fedora's kernel? Not in my knowledge

7. Logs provided as further attachment.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 2 Stéphane Daviet 2023-11-12 14:45:20 UTC
As pointed in the Fedora forum, my kernel was tainted by the mfe_aac_1007141249 module (Trellix aka McAfee antivirus kernel module, our corporate antivirus). Blacklisting the module gives a temporary fix to this booting problem.
