Description Ian Laurie 2024-03-15 00:37:40 UTC
Description of problem:
After updating Fedora 39 to 40 some rendering is broken. For example yelp launches with many errors and shows no content. This is under Xfce. Removing mesa-vulkan-drivers-24.0.0-2.fc40.x86_6 however has fixed the problem.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
mesa-24.0.0-2.fc40

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Problem was after upgrade from Fedora 39 to 40 on multiple platforms.
2.
3.

Actual results:
On multiple systems with varying video hardware (mix of NVIDIA and Intel) after upgrading 39 to 40 yelp (when launched from the command line) would launch with errors and show no content. When launched indirectly from another application (like Atril for example) yelp would open with no content.

Searching the web for a solution suggested this sort of issue has happened previously and mesa was the underlying cause. As an experiment I removed the vulkan drivers and it fixed the problem.

Additional info:
A thread discussing the issue in greater detail exists on the Fedora Test lists here:

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/test@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/VWIEYVFIYZJNA3N4JFLQNRESXGLJ5HVD/

Hardware profile of systems on which this problem was observed:

Dell Precision T5610 2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2603 v2 @ 1.80GHz (8 cores total)
NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX 760] (rev a1)

Intel NUC i7 NUC11PAH 1 x 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz
Intel Corporation TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 01)

Note also this same problem happened on my native Rawhide box, and removing the vulkan drives fixed the problem there also. The hardware profile of that system is as follows:

Dell Optiplex 3040 1 x 6th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-6100T CPU @ 3.20GHz
Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530 (rev 06)

I have not observed this problem [yet] on Fedora 39 with mesa-23.3.6-1.fc39.

I am seeing the same issues. Removing mesa-vulkan-drivers does not fix it, but changes things from NOT rendering to rendering, though I still can't interact with them.
I've only upgraded to 40 on 2 systems so far and both show the same issues.

1. NVIDIA GTX 1060 3G
2. Alder Lake Iris Xe

Everything previously worked flawlessly on several versions of Fedora over the years up to 39.

Are you also running Xfce, Jay?

Comment 3 Jay Guerette 2024-04-03 00:15:07 UTC
No. I was for a very long time ... switched to KDE/Plasma a couple years ago. Still running X11 as well, despite the upgrade process "forgetting" to upgrade the required packages and forcing me to manually install them. :-)

Comment 4 Adam Williamson 2024-04-03 01:11:01 UTC
It didn't forget, that was entirely intentional. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/KDE_Plasma_6

It seems worrying that you saw this on two systems with different graphics cards, but...on the other hand, I don't think I've seen it reported by anyone else yet. So, bit weird, really. Does Wayland work, if you try it?

Comment 5 Jay Guerette 2024-04-03 01:33:21 UTC
I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt that a user's preferred protocol wouldn't purposely be replaced with something that doesn't work. :-)

On both systems, I did try Wayland despite the fact that it was incapable of using the full resolution of the attached displays. For example on the Intel XE GPU, the display was limited to 1024x768 in the upper left corner of a 1920x1080 screen. The window rendered slightly differently, but was still unusable and wouldn't accept interaction.

Comment 6 Adam Williamson 2024-04-03 01:52:57 UTC
Huh. Well...that's weird. Hard to say what might be going on without more details, though. I'm not really sure it's the same issue as Ian, or it may be the issue Ian saw plus something else causing lack of interaction.

It might help to see the journal logs, at least...

(FWIW, my other laptop is an Alder Lake - Dell XPS 13 9315 - and I haven't seen any of the issues described in this bug on it, so it's a bit of a head scratcher).

Comment 7 Jay Guerette 2024-04-03 02:10:13 UTC
I installed yelp and it works fine, so it's a different issue. I don't want to hijack this bug report; I'll open my own if I can't figure it out.

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 40 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 40 on 2025-05-13.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '40'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version. Note that the version field may be hidden.
Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see it.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 40 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

Comment 9 Aoife Moloney 2025-05-16 07:58:41 UTC
Fedora Linux 40 entered end-of-life (EOL) status on 2025-05-13.

Fedora Linux 40 is no longer maintained, which means that it
will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we
are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora Linux
please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Note that the version
field may be hidden. Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see
the version field.

If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against an
active release.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
