I just realized today that the design folks have been working away over at https://gitlab.com/groups/fedora/design/-/epics/32 on "final" backgrounds for Fedora 40, but there has been an unfortunate time frame mismatch somewhere along the line. As per the schedule at https://fedorapeople.org/groups/schedule/f-40/f-40-key-tasks.html and the announcement at https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/TN7AX2TFVZKQ7DSGN3W46ENVVU4RZPCR/ , Fedora 40 Final freeze was on April 2. The 'final' backgrounds should really have been ready by then. As they were not, a freeze exception should have been requested long before today. It is unfortunately very late to try and get new images in now, as the go/no-go meeting is on Thursday. We really don't like to do new RCs after Monday, it gives very limited time for the compose and test process to happen. However, I felt it was only fair to at least file a bug now and propose it as a blocker to at least give the opportunity. Unless releng and the rest of the quality team are very relaxed about doing a new RC and test matrix to get new backgrounds in, though, I'm a bit hesitant to do it. The criterion here is https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_40_Final_Release_Criteria#Artwork , "The proposed final Fedora artwork must be included and used as the background on release-blocking desktops."
note, we do have the option - I think - of shipping the 'final' artwork as an update (either a 0-day update, that is available in the update repos on release day, or as a true 'post release' update if we're not ready by then). but I don't think we've ever done a complete re-design as an update before (we have, I think, shipped little touch-ups in the past), and I can imagine it being a surprise to people if they boot the live image, see one background, install and update, and see a completely different one. And if they happened to really like the beta image and then it goes away on update, they might be sad (people get attached to backgrounds). But it is an option to consider.
Please don't change the default background post release. If the "final" wallpapers are not ready, then they're just too late IMO.
FEDORA-2024-408be92ac3 (f40-backgrounds-40.1.0-1.fc40) has been submitted as an update to Fedora 40. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2024-408be92ac3
Proposed as a Freeze Exception for 40-final by Fedora user luya using the blocker tracking app because: Designed team made final change for the default wallpaper which unfortunately went past to the final freeze.
Discussed during Fedora 40 Final go/no-go meeting #2: https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org/meeting_matrix_fedoraproject-org/2024-04-18/f40-final-go-no-go-meeting.2024-04-18-17.01.html . Rejected as both a blocker and FE because the design team ultimately agreed in https://gitlab.com/groups/fedora/design/-/epics/32#note_1866027989 that it was too late to land the new backgrounds, making the Beta backgrounds again the "proposed" artwork for Final.
Following the discussions, lets defer the new background for Fedora 41 and close this ticket.
