I think gdm is now the last package in Fedora Workstation which depends on xorg-x11-xinit. Is it possible to drop the dependency? (or maybe a weak dependency could work? not sure) as part of the Xorg removal from the default packages. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot Fedora Rawhide Workstation 2. rpm -e xorg-x11-xinit Actual Results: error: Failed dependencies: xorg-x11-xinit is needed by (installed) gdm-1:46.2-4.fc41.x86_64
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora Linux 42 development cycle. Changing version to 42.
This one has a messy history. :) The 'Requires: xorg-x11-xinit' was dropped from gdm during the Fedora 41 development cycle as part of: "Update to 47.0, drop X11 support" https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdm/c/fb193607e1c498c1 The X11 support was soon restored in the f41 branch in a series of commits. However, even though the dependency on the /etc/X11/xinit/Xsession script provided by xorg-x11-xinit was restored, the 'Requires: xorg-x11-xinit' was forgotten: "Add back Xsession script" https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdm/c/dc3b4556c417ed49 The X11 support was restored in the f42 branch due to bug 2358741 and it included the 'Requires: xorg-x11-xinit': https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdm/c/21ea3e2aaba10f49 The X11 support was restored during the Fedora 43 development cycle, and the 'Requires: xorg-x11-xinit' was forgotten, just like it was for f41: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdm/c/2c9ed34258390200 Same feature, three different branches, three different commits. :) So, I propose restoring the 'Requires: xorg-x11-xinit' in the f43 and 'rawhide' branches. However, since I am not entirely confident that I got everything right, I have put my proposal in a pull request: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdm/pull-request/37 If we choose to go in this direction, then it seems that this bug will end up CLOSED WONTFIX. CCing Michael, because he touched this logic recently.
I agree with your proposal.
Okay only after scrolling back that I realised I had opened this. Can it be dropped for Gnome 50?
(In reply to Jens Petersen from comment #4) > Okay only after scrolling back that I realised I had opened this. My apologies for the delay. :) > Can it be dropped for Gnome 50? I can't answer this one, and will have to leave it to the others. CCing Adrian, because he has been working on GDM upstream and recently removed the runtime dependency on the dbus-daemon package.

Whoops, never saw the notification here. Long story short, if there is an X server installed and GDM needs to be able to launch X sessions via that X server, then xorg-x11-xinit is probably needed. If there is no X server installed and GDM thus can't launch X11 sessions anyway, then the package isn't needed. So sounds like its a dependency more of Xorg than of GDM
