rpm-ostree based systems can not install multiple packages that include the same files. The libstdc++ subpackage includes architecture python code & pyc files that are architecture independent and could be split into a subpackage to avoid this issue. ``` $ rpm -ql libstdc++-14.2.1-1.fc40.x86_64 /usr/lib/.build-id /usr/lib/.build-id/79 /usr/lib/.build-id/79/db3efd5f1273ca8c42abd22d1d9fd63cffe57c /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6.0.33 /usr/share/gcc-14 /usr/share/gcc-14/python /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/__init__.py /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/__pycache__ /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-312.opt-1.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-312.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6 /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__init__.py /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__ /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-312.opt-1.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__/__init__.cpython-312.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__/printers.cpython-312.opt-1.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__/printers.cpython-312.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__/xmethods.cpython-312.opt-1.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/__pycache__/xmethods.cpython-312.pyc /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/printers.py /usr/share/gcc-14/python/libstdcxx/v6/xmethods.py /usr/share/gdb /usr/share/gdb/auto-load /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib64 /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib64/__pycache__ /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib64/__pycache__/libstdc++.so.6.0.33-gdb.cpython-312.opt-1.pyc /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib64/__pycache__/libstdc++.so.6.0.33-gdb.cpython-312.pyc /usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6.0.33-gdb.py ``` This was likely triggered by: - https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gcc/c/5551c1491d79b411a6440ed560ae2371ae32644a?branch=f40 - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2294381 See: https://github.com/fedora-silverblue/issue-tracker/issues/590#issuecomment-2320720786 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Try to install both libstdc++.x86_64 & libstdc++.i686 on an rpm-ostree base system (Silverblue for example) Actual Results: It fails to install both pacakges Expected Results: Both packages can be installed
Shouldn't that just be fixed in rpm-ostree instead? I mean, having same files in multilib rpm packages is fairly normal case which has it been designed for; as long as the files are identical. E.g. all the *.h header files in lib*-devel packages are all the same while just the lib*.{a,so} files have different paths and are different.
I was indeed wondering what changed and why we haven't seen that in the past and what's missing on the rpm-ostree side of things as those files should all have the same sha256sum. Turns out they don't anymore since we merge https://pagure.io/workstation-ostree-config/pull-request/556 for https://gitlab.com/fedora/bootc/tracker/-/issues/3. So I'll revert that instead. Sorry for the noise.

This still seems to be affecting users, see Bug 2317917. Is there something users need to do to resolve the problem?
It looks like https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2317917 is not using a Fedora Atomic Desktop so this is not a duplicate of this bug.
