I am not exactly sure if systemd is to blame for the issue or if nvidia drivers are to blame.

all these applications were opening in the fedora 40 stable release but stopped when updated to fedora 41.

Also to note is even when nvidia driver is disabled the applications in question take a long while to open but no errors are visible in the journalctl logs.

Comment 1 Vaishnav.R 2024-09-28 18:01:41 UTC
Changing back to opengl for GTK
in
etc/environment
using
GSK_RENDERER=gl
fixes both issues
which is the applications described not opening at all when the nvidia drivers are enabled
and the issue with slow load times when the nvidia drivers are disabled (and amd Igpu is used instead)

Comment 2 Olivier Fourdan 2024-09-30 12:34:13 UTC
It's an issue with the egl-wayland library from NVIDIA and Vulkan native Wayland applications.

See https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/issues/211#note_2576891

Comment 3 Olivier Fourdan 2024-09-30 13:58:22 UTC
Moving to egl-wayland, this is isn't a bug with Wayland itself, the core protocol specification nor the low-level C library that deals with the protocol.

This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.

Comment 5 knipp30 2024-11-17 23:26:10 UTC
Can confirm similar behavior with an all AMD system as well.

Ryzen 7 7840HS with iGPU as well as discrete Radeon 7700s

Without the following added:
~~~
$ cat /etc/environment
GSK_RENDERER = ngl
~~~

The apps from the problem statement are slow to open (the do open) with ~3-5 seconds of wait.

After adding the above, the apps open almost immediately.

Can create a new bug if needed - however, it looks to relate to the same missing variable in /etc/environment.

Comment 6 Simone Caronni 2025-05-16 10:37:42 UTC
I think this was fixed in one of the newer egl library updates. Can someone confirm?

Comment 7 Simone Caronni 2025-05-16 10:40:55 UTC
Actually, tons of updates have been pushed for the EGL libraries since the bug was opened, please reopen if still relevant. Thanks.
