icedtea-web failed to build from source in Fedora rawhide/f42 https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=127987586 For details on the mass rebuild see: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_42_Mass_Rebuild Please fix icedtea-web at your earliest convenience and set the bug's status to ASSIGNED when you start fixing it. If the bug remains in NEW state for 8 weeks, icedtea-web will be orphaned. Before branching of Fedora 43, icedtea-web will be retired, if it still fails to build. This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora Linux 42 development cycle. Changing version to 42.
Is there an alternative to icedtea-web, or will it be available again?
I will try to make icedtea-web available for Fedora 42 (and RHEL 10) soon. Unfortunately, the icedtea-web code is aging while ongoing Java development removes old relicts and compatibilities, thus this is highly likely to break in the future again. The best option for the future is indeed to avoid all software requiring this ancient Java web start technology, because the software itself is already likely ancient, dead or similar bad. Having or using icedtea-web is actually riding a dead horse.
I agree, I often had problems with java web start. But for example, some IPMI firmware for kvm remote console on older servers use java web start. (Newer firmware use HTML5.) Thanks for your support!
