Comment 25 vvedomil 2025-11-17 13:02:24 UTC
Hello,

I’m not sure if this is the right place, but since there’s no way to contact the package maintainer directly, I ended up writing here. Arch Linux provides a much friendlier way to reach maintainers.

Could we finally get an update to Syncthing 2.x? I recently moved from Arch Linux (CachyOS) to Fedora because I assumed it would require less maintenance on my laptop, which I mainly use for watching movies, YouTube, and similar tasks. I didn’t want to stay on Arch Linux because it sometimes needs manual intervention.

I just turned on my laptop to sync my photos, documents, and other files in my /home directory, and discovered that Syncthing wasn’t doing anything. It even reported version 1.30.x. I confirmed that my Arch Linux systems are fully up to date and running Syncthing 2.x.

It’s been a few months since Syncthing 2 was released. How is it possible that a large company backed by IBM doesn’t have the resources to package such a popular piece of software? Arch Linux, maintained by people in their free time, manages to ship updates much faster.

Please just update it. I don’t even care about a response — I’m switching back to CachyOS on this laptop because this is absurd and frustrating.

Regards,
Vědomil Vildomec — a disappointed user who expected more from a corporation with so many resources.

Comment 26 Maxwell G 2025-11-17 14:36:12 UTC
Hi, I'm not the maintainer but chiming here.

> It’s been a few months since Syncthing 2 was released. How is it possible that a large company backed by IBM doesn’t have the resources to package such a popular piece of software? Arch Linux, maintained by people in their free time, manages to ship updates much faster.

Fedora is not maintained by Red Hat or IBM. Red Hat is our primary sponsor, but most of the package maintenance, including the maintenance of this package, is done by volunteers working during their free time. Please, check your tone.

Comment 27 Fabio Valentini 2025-11-17 15:01:39 UTC
Hi, package maintainer here. I can confirm that I am not affiliated with Red Hat or IBM and don't get money from them to do package maintenance. (I wish!) :)

I haven't forgotten about this update. However, with it being a new major release, switching the database backend to SQLite, I wasn't sure how to best handle it - should it be rawhide-only? Should I file a Change proposal? I'm leaning towards "submit 2.* to rawhide first, let it cook there for a while, and then submit the update to stable branches too" (since it *should* be a transparent upgrade from the old database backend). I also wanted to clean up the packaging to use the new modern Go packaging tools. Doing all that would require mostly one thing: time.

Comment 28 Alexander Dyadyun 2025-11-29 04:52:11 UTC
What if just create new package `syncthing2` that replace `syncthing`?
Machines with automatic updates will remain on `syncthing`. Users who really need the new version can install syncthing2 over syncthing manually.

Comment 29 fedoraaccounts 2025-11-29 09:23:41 UTC
Just taking a little longer on testing channels seems like the better option to me, having a new package feels like a nono for me, what about vulnerabilities found in such version, and now that is what people are downloading by default? This is supposed to be a quiet update, and this is already taking a significant amount of time, should be stable enough at this point right?
