Description Daniel Rusek 2025-04-02 22:02:20 UTC
It looks like that the gtk4/libadwaita port has broken translations and most of the gnome-abrt UI is no longer translated.

See the attached screenshot of the Czech localization that is 100% translated (with last change from 2020) on Fedora Weblate[1].

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use a fully updated Fedora 42 Beta with non-English locale.
2. Open "Problem Reporting".

Actual Results:
Most of the gnome-abrt UI appears untranslated.

Expected Results:
The UI translation state matches the Fedora Weblate translation state for the selected language.

gnome-abrt-1.5.0-2.fc42.x86_64.

Comment 2 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2025-04-02 22:20:45 UTC
Proposed as a Blocker and Freeze Exception for 42-final by Fedora user asciiwolf using the blocker tracking app because:

All non-English translations seem to be broken and English strings are displayed instead since gnome-abrt 1.5.0 for most of its UI even though all these strings are fully translated on Fedora Weblate and included in the gnome-abrt release.

This is a major regression and a problem for many non-English speaking users and as such should be resolved before F42 Final.

Comment 3 Geraldo Simião 2025-04-03 03:40:00 UTC
Bug confirmed with pt-br too. Even with abrt, gnome-abrt, libreport, retrace-server all of them translated at weblate, we still have english strings. Tested with Fedora-Workstation-Live-42-20250402.n.0.x86_64.iso

Comment 4 Rafael Fontenelle 2025-04-03 03:41:06 UTC
gnome-abrt's POT file hasn't been updated since 2020 (this is also true for abrt[1]), causing new strings to not be available for translation.

[1] https://github.com/abrt/abrt/issues/1647

Steps to reproduce (in gnome-abrt root):
- meson setup . build
- meson compile -C build gnome-abrt-pot
- git diff po/gnome-abrt.pot (notice how strings like "Detected Crashes" shows up for translation)

I see we have a new update for abrt, but sadly still no translations on it: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2025-80a4b526e5

Comment 7 Adam Williamson 2025-04-03 21:33:34 UTC
+7 FE in https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/blocker-review/issue/1826 , marking accepted. Blocker vote is split.

Comment 8 Daniel Rusek 2025-04-04 09:56:25 UTC
Because the problem is caused by an outdated (not updated since 2020) translation template (pot) file, it will also require translators to update their translations on Fedora Weblate after it gets merged. This will take some time and there is sadly not enough time to have this ready before the F42 Final release.

I have discussed this with the GNOME Abrt developer and suggested that the new gnome-abrt version with updated translations (synced from Weblate) should be released a month or two after the pot file update PR gets merged to give the translators enough time to update their translations.

FEDORA-2025-80a4b526e5 (gnome-abrt-1.5.2-1.fc42) has been submitted as an update to Fedora 42.

Comment 10 Daniel Rusek 2025-04-05 11:36:08 UTC
The submitted build does not solve the translation issue - it only updates the translatable template. This ticket should be kept open after the build gets accepted.

Also, the Weblate translations seem to be outdated and not synced with the updated template yet for some reason:

Comment 12 Rafael Fontenelle 2025-04-05 12:01:37 UTC
https://github.com/abrt/l10n/pull/3

Pull request created against abrt/l10n GitHub repository (which is the VCS repository configured in Weblate) to fix gnome-abrt. I don't know what is the proper procedure to update all languages, so focusing in gnome-abrt for now.
