Description Tom.Rix 2025-08-02 23:46:03 UTC
Spec URL: https://trix.fedorapeople.org/pytorch-examples.spec
SRPM URL: https://trix.fedorapeople.org/pytorch-examples-0.0%5egit20250727.e9a4e75-1.fc43.src.rpm

pytorch-examples showcases examples of using PyTorch. The goal
is to have curated, short, few/no dependencies high quality examples
that are substantially different from each other that can be
emulated in your existing work.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Pavel Šimovec 2025-09-11 10:09:13 UTC
[!]: Package is licensed with an open-source compatible license and meets
     other legal requirements as defined in the legal section of Packaging
     Guidelines.
There is the problem with not-real license, but it's already fixed upstream.
Using a630ec6965af237be71f6956dff4f62a43a9e7ab commit or later for this package will resolve the issue.
https://github.com/pytorch/examples/issues/1378

[x]: Development files must be in a -devel package
Automation complains about dev files not being -devel package, but this as this is package with examples, if the file cpp/transfer-
  learning/main.h is expected for the examples, then no problem.

I wasn't 100% sure about expected usage of this package, none of the ways how I tried to use it seemed like the correct way. Could you please specify how the package is expected to be used?
Below, I just mention what I have tried.
________________

I tried for example `python3 /usr/share/pytorch-examples/mnist/main.py --epochs 3 --no-accel` which worked, but without the --no-accel option, I got an error, even when I have installed rocm.
 ```File "/usr/share/pytorch-examples/mnist/main.py", line 141, in <module>
    main()
    ~~~~^^
  File "/usr/share/pytorch-examples/mnist/main.py", line 97, in main
    use_accel = not args.no_accel and torch.accelerator.is_available()
                                      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  File "/usr/lib64/python3.13/site-packages/torch/__init__.py", line 2562, in __getattr__
    raise AttributeError(f"module '{__name__}' has no attribute '{name}'")
AttributeError: module 'torch' has no attribute 'accelerator'```

ChatGPT gave me a workaround:

```
mkdir -p "$HOME/.ptex-shim"
cat > "$HOME/.ptex-shim/sitecustomize.py" << 'EOF'
import types, torch
if not hasattr(torch, "accelerator"):
    torch.accelerator = types.SimpleNamespace(
        is_available=torch.cuda.is_available,
        current_accelerator=lambda: torch.device("cuda" if torch.cuda.is_available() else "cpu"),
    )
EOF
```
`PYTHONPATH="$HOME/.ptex-shim" python3 /usr/share/pytorch-examples/mnist/main.py --epochs 3`

Which works and runs corrently on GPU, but I'd expect the example to just work out of the box when I just install python-examples and rocm.

Then I tried time_sequence_prediction, there I had problem with permissions. When I copied the folder to a writable location, it worked.

I also tried running run_python_examples.sh in userspace, some of the examples worked, but it was running in venv and re-downloading dependencies as torch that were already installed as a rpm dependecy.

Comment 2 Tom.Rix 2025-09-12 19:50:14 UTC
We may have a mismatch on expectations.
Most of the dependencies for the examples are met with fedora packages and I am not sure if every command line arg is functional and most/all of the examples download some data so the write permissions on the /usr/share isn't going to work well with that. I would expect the user to copy the samples to some local area and use them to see how pytorch works and have some problems with samples that do not work.
This is not a critical package, I don't mind not including it.

Comment 3 Pavel Šimovec 2025-10-14 15:26:17 UTC
Alright then, let's lower my expectation and just ship the examples as upstream provides them, and we will expect users to just copy the examples.

Just please use this commit or version with this commit. Otherwise I have no other objections.
