Description Erik Christensen 2025-08-04 16:58:05 UTC
Description of problem:

This is a request for updating the libheif version available in EPEL to at least v1.19.7.

The latest version as of August 4, 2025 is v1.20.1
https://github.com/strukturag/libheif/releases/tag/v1.20.1

https://github.com/strukturag/libheif/releases/tag/v1.19.7

Can this be updated in EPEL 8, or does this only get released in EPEL 10?

Thank you,
Erik Christensen

libheif is not available in EPEL 8 at all. Maybe you're referring to the package available from RPM Fusion repository for EPEL? The current version there for EPEL8 is quite old, 1.7.0-2.el8.

What do you need that version for? Any reason you can't move to a newer RHEL major version?

Yes, you are correct. I do see that libheif is not included in EPEL 8 but may be included in an RPM Fusion repo.

I am running RHEL 8.10, but would like to stay on that version if possible. I am trying to resolve this issue:
https://github.com/strukturag/libheif/issues/1190 and looking to install libhief via package manager.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you.

HEVC/H.265 codec is out of scope for Fedora and EPEL anyway, so this should be completely deferred to RPM Fusion bugzilla.

Note that indeed neither EPEL 9 nor EPEL 10 versions are recent enough to handle the issue mentioned above even w/ additional freeworld support, at least 1.18.x is needed.

See also bug 2332519 for completeness.
