Description dsp3 2025-09-14 17:38:19 UTC
With Kernel 6.15.x I have the following network card detected and working:

Network:
Device-1: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] driver: iwlwifi
    v: kernel pcie: speed: 2.5 GT/s lanes: 1 bus-ID: 03:00.0 chip-ID: 8086:0085

With Kernel 6.16.x no network card is detected

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot into kernel 6.15.x and wifi is working
2. Boot into kernel 6.16.x and wifi doesn't work as there is no network card detected
3.

Comment 1 redhat_bugzilla.4hvqv 2025-09-15 07:25:58 UTC
Same issue here. However, since kernel 6.16.7 the system additionally freezes after starting the gnome session.

Comment 2 Victor Schulz 2025-09-18 07:47:11 UTC
I have a Thinkpad X220 running the XFCE spin of Fedora 42 that seem to be affected by this issue. In my case wifi works for a couple of minutes, followed by network disconnection (NetworkManager Applet shows no connection) and a full system freeze after a couple of seconds. I could not capture anything suspicious with dmesg.

Comment 4 quant 2025-09-18 22:44:49 UTC
The kernel series 6.16.x bug related to the above Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (802.11a/b/g/n)) wireless card is hereby also confirmed.
We have two machines with these cards and both of them exhibit the bug. One empiric observation: it seems that the bug shows itself sooner when the cards are connected to a 5 GHz channel as opposed to a 2.4 GHz
channel. Details can be found in the attached file.
In particular, what caught my attention is the line:

[108842.136214] kernel BUG at mm/slub.c:546!

However, I did not have time to delve in further and I am not sure this has anything to do with the problem at hand.

Comment 5 Richard L. England 2025-09-21 06:03:17 UTC
I've encountered the same issue, I believe.

Fedora 42, New installation from live ISO. Wifi (Centrino) was working. Kernel was 6.14.0-63.

Did a general update and Kernel 6.16.7-200 was installed. Wifi was no longer active. It detected no new access points and the previous one was inactive.

Reverted to Kernel 6.14.0-63 and Wifi began to function again as expected.

Comment 6 quant 2025-09-22 01:06:02 UTC
Upon a closer look at the kernel source tree I see that some sweeping changes have been made in the code base of the iwlwifi driver in the first half of May, 2025, and merged into the 6.16 mainline kernel (as well as being carried over to the release candidates for 6.17). See for instance,

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/cfg/6000.c?h=v6.16

as it pertains to the wireless card(s) discussed in this thread.

I wonder whether the upstream maintainer of the iwlwifi driver has been alerted about the issue with this card, for it seems to have been known for some time:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2257335

Also, the issue does not seem to have been addressed in the stable 6.16.8 mainline kernel.

Other Intel cards have been affected as well by the changes in the iwlwifi driver. For example:

https://community.intel.com/t5/Wireless/Centrino-Wireless-N-1000-not-working-with-Linux-6-16/m-p/1716510#M61513

Comment 7 quant 2025-09-25 07:55:15 UTC
Here is yet another case

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/another-kernel-6-16-wifi-problem-disconnecting-randomly/164779/7

apparently identical to the ones reported in this thread.

I have compared, and indeed our two machines that exhibit the bug have exactly the same model wireless card as the one reported in the above post. Namely,

Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (802.11a/b/g/n)

or more precisely

System 8086:0085 (rev 34)
Subsystem: 8086:1311

In other words, Intel device 0085/1311, as reported by the kernel:

[ 33.235161] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Detected crf-id 0xa5a5a5a1, cnv-id 0xa5a5a5a1 wfpm id 0xa5a5a5a1
[ 33.235236] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: PCI dev 0085/1311, rev=0xb0, rfid=0xd55555d5
[ 33.235242] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205 AGN
[ 33.593557] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: loaded firmware version 18.168.6.1 6000g2a-6.ucode op_mode iwldvm

[ 35.441337] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEBUGFS enabled
[ 35.441339] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEVICE_TRACING disabled
[ 35.441340] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205 AGN, REV=0xB0

May I kindly ask the bug reporters to this thread if you could verify the model of your wireless cards by running the commands

sudo lspci -kvd::280 && sudo lspci -kvnd::280

sudo dmesg | grep iwlwifi | head

in a terminal and reporting their outputs back. If this is indeed a kernel bug related solely to device 0085/1311 then hopefully it will be easier to locate. Thank you.

Comment 8 redhat_bugzilla.4hvqv 2025-09-25 08:06:54 UTC
I reached out to the maintainer of iwlwifi referring to this bug tracker site and they wrote:

"Well, we're aware of various bugs (affecting various devices) that were reported to us (we don't monitor Redhat and other distro bug trackers or forums), and to my knowledge they were all fixed now...

In the log on this ticket I see "0x00001030 | ADVANCED_SYSASSERT" which I know I first fixed, but got the fix wrong for 7000/8000 series devices, and then fixed for - I believe - all of them.

We don't have much influence over how these fixes reach distributions though."

Comment 11 Michael Schmitz 2025-09-25 18:18:05 UTC
I don't think the issue is limited to

  System 8086:0085 (rev 34)
  Subsystem: 8086:1311

since lspci shows

  Subsystem: 8086:1321

on my system. At least with 6.16.4, I face the issue of randomly loosing my Wifi connection.

I observed that a few weeks ago after upgrading to 6.16.3.

Thank you so much to all for the quick response! And thank you redhat_bugzilla.4hvqv for taking the initiative and reaching out to the iwlwifi maintainer!

This post is just a summary of the survey with a few comments and observations.

(a) All affected devices reported in this thread are from the 6000 series. (NOT the 7000 series and NOT the 8000 series.)
Here is the list:

0085/1311 (6205)
0082/1321 (6205)
0085/c220 (6205S)
088e/4460 (6235)
008a/5325 (1030 but "really a derivative of 6030", see below).

(b) Device 0085/c220 (dsp3) has been mentioned in passing in the thread

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=220477

but seemingly not addressed. (It is a subject of an archlinux thread referred to in my comment #7 above.)

(c) NONE of the listed devices in (a) but ONE appear in the list of devices posted in the thread

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=220472

to which, I believe, the iwlwifi maintainer is referring to. The ONLY device
from the list in (a) which does appear in that bugzilla.kernel thread is 008a/5325 (Richard L. England).
Presumably, a fix for that device is included in the stable 6.16.8 mainline kernel. Here is the relevant
entry from the 6.16.8 changelog:

=======================================================================================================================
commit 75465ae51baa6d5b1b94e235716bb7776faaf665
Author: Johannes Berg <johannes.berg>

    commit 2682e7a317504a9d81cbb397249d4299e84dfadd upstream.

The 130/1030 devices are really derivatives of 6030,
with some small differences not pertaining to the MAC,
so they must use the 6030 MAC config.

Richard L. England, would you be so kind to share you experience in whether the upcoming Fedora 6.16.8 kernel
makes any difference to the behavior of your device?

(d) No fixes are forthcoming in the 6.16.9 stable mainline kernel, as far as I know, and the list from (a) (with the exception of 008a/5325) still does not seem to have been addressed.

This is another case of the bug exhibiting itself again on device 0085/1311 with the 6.16.8 kernel.
These lines can be found in the attachment (Comment 3) to my original report with the 6.16.7 kernel.

From kernel.org but 220615

--- Comment #2 from Emmanuel Grumbach (emmanuel.grumbach) ---
6.16.10 will include the fix.

Closing this.

Please reopen if you still see the problem on that (yet to be released)
version.

Comment 28 quant 2025-10-01 00:26:33 UTC
Thank you very much for the update.

Since a new, 2000 series, device has been reported, for the record, I have updated the list of still affected devices as of kernel 6.16.8:

0085/1311 (6205)
0082/1321 (6205)
0085/c220 (6205S)
088e/4460 (6235)
0891/4222 (2200)

Device 008a/5325 has been excluded from the list, for a fix for it in kernel 6.16.8 has been reported, and also taking into account Comment 19 above.

Here is a snippet from the mainline 6.16.10 kernel changelog which seems to be relevant to this thread:

commit 2243b9b728b3c33cc536a3f76717dd475c2d33e3
Author: Johannes Berg <johannes.berg>
Date: Thu Sep 25 10:00:07 2025 +0200

wifi: iwlwifi: pcie: fix byte count table for some devices

    commit a38108a23ab558b834d71d542d32c05ab0fb64d4 upstream.

In my previous fix for this condition, I erroneously listed 9000
instead of 7000 family, when 7000/8000 were already using iwlmvm.
Thus the condition ended up wrong, causing the issue I had fixed
for older devices to suddenly appear on 7000/8000 family devices.
    Correct the condition accordingly.

wifi: iwlwifi: fix byte count table for old devices

    commit 586e3cb33ba6890054b95aa0ade0a165890efabd upstream.

For devices handled by iwldvm, bc_table_dword was never set, but I missed
that during the removal thereof. Change the logic to not treat the byte
count table as dwords for devices older than 9000 series to fix that.

Comment 30 Mike 2025-10-03 11:03:41 UTC
kernel 6.16.10 from koji.fedoraproject.org seems to have fixed this issue (works fine so far).
I'll test the rest of the day and post again if I see the restarts/crashes again.

I'm running from the 2000 series (0891/4222 (2200)) that reported the WiFi bug. I could get kernels 6.16.7 and 6.16.8 to produce this bug within 2 to 10 minutes depending on what network traffic I was generating.

I too have installed kernel 6.16.10 and haven't experienced any issues so far. I've only been running it for a couple of hours, however this is much longer then before. I too will continue to run and test throughout the coming days, but so far so good.

Update to kernel version 6.16.10 solved the issue for me.
