Description Pavel Vlček 2025-09-16 11:47:26 UTC
After upgrade from 42 to 43, keyboard stops working in overview

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
This bug was originally reported here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-build-meta/-/issues/1138
I can not reproduce it on live media, but only after upgrading from 42 to 43 with additional steps to reproduce. These steps are:
1. Open Gnome-software
2. Press F10 or click main menu icon
3. Try to navigate with up / down keys
or
press Super key.
use ctrl alt tab to move to the favorites
press it agin to move to search and after that to applications
Now, it works as expected, keyboard starts working, but after closing applications, these steps must be repeated to get keyboard working again.
Actual Results:
It is not possible to search / browse applications wia keyboard.

Expected Results:
Using keyboard in the same way as in Fedora 42 / Gnome 48.

Additional Information:
Not applicable with the latest beta iso image, only after Fedora upgrade.

This is a bug in mutter, see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/8640

Arch has backported a fix (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/8640), maybe Fedora should too?

Comment 2 Kamil Páral 2025-09-23 07:20:42 UTC
@cgarnach Hi Carlos! You fixed it in GNOME, can we please get a backport for Fedora? This is quite an inconvenience especially for blind users. Or is this coming as part of GNOME 49.1 in time before F43 Final? Thanks!

Comment 3 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2025-09-25 17:52:55 UTC
Proposed as a Blocker and Freeze Exception for 43-final by Fedora user augenauf using the blocker tracking app because:

 Violates Window manager functionality, see https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_43_Final_Release_Criteria#Window_manager_functionality

Moreover it is a major inconvenience for visually impaired users - not a criteria but it should be one to comply Fedora's mission of Inclusion, see https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/dei/

$ sudo dnf update *.rpm
$ reboot

I cannot reproduce on my machine with the above fix. But let's see how it works for Pavel.

I am on sick leave, but I upgraded the computer and the issue is gone for me. I used sudo dnf upgrade. I get some updates, so I installed, rebooted and the issue is gone without installing requested FEDORA-2025-343d835ddb.

Comment 9 Kamil Páral 2025-09-26 14:47:27 UTC
Thanks for confirmation. The update was pushed to updates-testing 13 hours ago, so I assume you already received it as part of a regular update.
If people provide karma, we can push this stable.

Update fixed the issue for me.

Comment 13 Lukas Ruzicka 2025-09-29 17:24:57 UTC
Discussed at the 2025-09-29 (blocker / freeze exception) review meeting:

This bug is rejected as it doesn't seem straightforwardly reproducible, as confirmed by several testers. It is not considered severe enough to block the release. Note that it is already accepted as a Freeze Exception, and the fix is tested and will be included regardless.
