Description zingale 2025-11-04 13:12:17 UTC
I am running Fedora on an Intel NUC with Intel HD 620 graphics. Everything worked great with Fedora 42. On Fedora 43, it boots to a blank screen. I can access the virtual terminals and I can ssh into the machine, but the display is not working.

Additionally, there are a lot of users associated with gdm:

$ w | grep gdm | wc
     82 656 7872

where these appear as:

gdm-gree tty1 08:03 7:11 0.01s 0.02s gdm-session-worker [pam/gdm-launch-environment]

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot
2.
3.
Actual Results:
I get a blank screen. gdm doesn't come up. The users list suggests a gdm problem.

Expected Results:
I should see the login screen

also note that the number of gdm users is increasing with time. a few minutes after submitting this, I now see 102 gdm users.

Note: I edited the hostname to be localhost.

Also, perhaps relevant, this machine has run every version of Fedora since Fedora 26, always upgrading via dnf system-upgrade

Comment 3 zingale 2025-11-07 15:01:01 UTC
I've had this issue on a second machine now. The issue can be resolved by doing:

authselect select sssd --force
authselect apply-changes

it seems that the F43 upgrade doesn't update pam_lastlog.so to pam_lastlog2.so, probably affecting machines that have gone through many updates (the second machine originally had F30 installed clean and has been system-upgraded to all versions of Fedora since).

This appears to be a duplicate of https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2396016

so I will close
