I am running Fedora on an Intel NUC with Intel HD 620 graphics. Everything worked great with Fedora 42. On Fedora 43, it boots to a blank screen. I can access the virtual terminals and I can ssh into the machine, but the display is not working. Additionally, there are a lot of users associated with gdm: $ w | grep gdm | wc 82 656 7872 where these appear as: gdm-gree tty1 08:03 7:11 0.01s 0.02s gdm-session-worker [pam/gdm-launch-environment] Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. boot 2. 3. Actual Results: I get a blank screen. gdm doesn't come up. The users list suggests a gdm problem. Expected Results: I should see the login screen Additional Information: lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v6/7th Gen Core Processor Host Bridge/DRAM Registers (rev 02) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 620 (rev 02) 00:08.0 System peripheral: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v5/v6 / E3-1500 v5 / 6th/7th/8th Gen Core Processor Gaussian Mixture Model 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP USB 3.0 xHCI Controller (rev 21) 00:14.2 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP Thermal subsystem (rev 21) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP CSME HECI #1 (rev 21) 00:17.0 SATA controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 21) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root Port #1 (rev f1) 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root Port #6 (rev f1) 00:1c.7 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root Port #8 (rev f1) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point LPC/eSPI Controller (rev 21) 00:1f.2 Memory controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP PMC (rev 21) 00:1f.3 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio (rev 21) 00:1f.4 SMBus: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP SMBus (rev 21) 00:1f.6 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (4) I219-V (rev 21) 3a:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78) 3b:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. also note that the number of gdm users is increasing with time. a few minutes after submitting this, I now see 102 gdm users.

Also, perhaps relevant, this machine has run every version of Fedora since Fedora 26, always upgrading via dnf system-upgrade
I've had this issue on a second machine now. The issue can be resolved by doing: authselect select sssd --force authselect apply-changes it seems that the F43 upgrade doesn't update pam_lastlog.so to pam_lastlog2.so, probably affecting machines that have gone through many updates (the second machine originally had F30 installed clean and has been system-upgraded to all versions of Fedora since).
