Description Augusto Stoffel 2025-11-16 09:33:52 UTC
Depending on certain font configurations, the character ⊞ is displayed as ⊠. (I assume this is a problem in fontconfig but it could be somewhere else.)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure GNOME Terminal or Foot to use the IBM Plex Mono font.
2. Insert or paste the character ⊞ (SQUARED PLUS, codepoint 0x229E).

Actual Results:
The displayed character is ⊠ (SQUARED TIMES, codepoint 0x22A0)

Not a fontconfig issue and depends on what a font you have installed there. Apparently IBM Plex Mono doesn't have glyphs for U+229e nor U+22a0. It implies that you have fonts something wrongly assigned those glyphs.

There are some ways to see what is wrong though, you can get a list of fonts which has them:

$ fc-list :charset=0x229e

and then check them with fontforge for example.

Thanks for the pointer. I tracked it down to JetBrains Mono. There already is a bug report upstream.
