Description Fedora Release Engineering 2026-01-29 05:50:30 UTC
python-pandas failed to build from source in Fedora rawhide/f44

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=141199502

For details on the mass rebuild see:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_44_Mass_Rebuild
Please fix python-pandas at your earliest convenience and set the bug's status to
ASSIGNED when you start fixing it. If the bug remains in NEW state for 8 weeks,
python-pandas will be orphaned. Before branching of Fedora 45,
python-pandas will be retired, if it still fails to build.

For more details on the FTBFS policy, please visit:

I did a local rebuild using a F-44 buildroot from 2026-01-19 from koji (aka before mass rebuild, but with gcc 16 already) and it is also failing.

And from the build.log it looks like the only failing test cases are int16/uint16 related, which might be significant ...

Comment 5 Dan Horák 2026-01-30 16:39:14 UTC
FWIW python-pandas is affected by the orphaning of https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-gcsfs -> "No match for argument: python3dist(gcsfs) >= 2022.11" when building in mock

gcsfs is an optional dependency explicitly listed in the SPEC. It can be removed.

Comment 7 Peter Robinson 2026-02-01 12:48:06 UTC
And from the orphan message:

> Orphaned for: Other -- Version 2025.12.0 introduces a dependency on google-cloud-storage-control, which depends on grpcio and proto-plus/protobuf. I don’t want to deal with that.

I don't particularly either so will drop the dep for the time being.

Comment 8 Karolina Surma 2026-04-27 09:37:03 UTC
I am trying to bootstrap pandas for python 3.15 build, and version 2.3.3 fails on the import check with
"ImportError: Unable to import required dependencies:
pytz: No module named 'pytz'"

There's quite a lot of pytz imports in the source code, and I see an attempt to use zoneinfo in tests in the patches. This doesn't mitigate the imports in the code pandas modules. I don't know what's the correct way forward.

Comment 9 Peter Robinson 2026-04-28 07:19:51 UTC
I'm moving to pandas 3.x for F45+ and will get back to it next week (beginning of May).

Comment 10 Karolina Surma 2026-05-20 12:54:04 UTC
Hello, will you be able to tackle the update? There's a rebuild for Python 3.15 planned for the beginning of June and pandas block a chunk of other packages in Fedora. It would help a lot if we could build at least the bootstrapped version.

Comment 11 Peter Robinson 2026-05-20 13:26:30 UTC
F-45 is getting pandas3, I was planning on pushing all of that in the next week or two

Comment 12 Dan Horák 2026-05-20 15:05:25 UTC
Peter, do you see the s390x test failure also with pandas3 or does it look good in this regard?

There's a single test failure I need to dig into, but the last I looked it wasn't s390x specific. I'm doing it in a side branch, I'll be sure to ping if I run into an issue, thx.

Comment 14 Karolina Surma 2026-05-21 11:01:47 UTC
Would you consider opening a WIP pull request to dist-git? It would get picked up by automation and tested in Coprs with Python 3.15. We'd have some more time to smoothen issues out.

Comment 16 Peter Robinson 2026-05-22 15:14:39 UTC
pandas 3.0.3 now built in a side tag, building dependent packages currently.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora Linux 45 development cycle.
Changing version to 45.
